The Indian Thread (TiT) # 15

Ajayc: Yes cc(ers) are wonderful people, but we could have a spy watching TiT too…

Hey who all play the street version of the game… <no runs behind the wicket… you are out if you hit the ball into a house along the street , … “one tip one hand” often comes into play… and a lot of other unheard of rules)

I live in : New Okhla Industrial Development Area
YEs that’s a CITY… its no locality name

Street Cricket is my favorite form of the game. :D

There are no rules really and that’s why it’s awesome.

I mostly use cricket as an occasional disguise for Really Bad Humour. (It’s peculiar to Commonwealth countries, I guess. Ergo, I love horrifying my American friends with it.)

Are there times when you have to shell out you entire savings from your pocket money or in case you are lucky not to be caught… there’s no cricket for almost a day or two <we cann’t live wihout cricket for more than that)

Who all play cricket with no teams… you are given random batting orders and except the batsman everyone else playing, fields

Yeah, tell someone that the game lasts for 5 days and then watch their expression. T’is priceless.

@pranjal: Yes, I do play that particular style of Street Cricket as well. You can’t help it - it’s not easy getting enough people to fill 2 teams.

really priceless!

Oh I agree with the explanation part. (Anyone remember the famous explanation of the rules,

:D:D:D

wow… I came across this for the first time…
And its cool…
Thanks for sharing it K_twin

Breaking NEWS::::
Team India on terrorist HIT LIST… INDIAN COMMANDOS to ensure the safety of the players in West Indies

k_twin – yeah, I’ve seen that explanation. (Actually, I use it on friends – they are uniformly bewildered, which is great fun.)

there are different versions of cricket? Boy I feel like I don’t know anything about India, inspite of being born and having lived there for 8 years

Well not really different versions, more like different formats. Test, ODI and Twenty20. (A number of other formats as well, street cricket’s more of an informal game, though deadly serious in most parts of India (and the Gulf as well). Other than that, if you’re really interested, and not easily put off, the Wiki article is as ever a good place to start.

P.S. I’ve never really lived in India myself since I was three (And a very weird three I might add :)), but I do visit often, and as I live in a country that’s around 40% Indian in population and have been surrounded by expats in a similar situation all my life, I never really feel like the typical NRI when I go back. (Though my Hindi accent could do with a great deal of work. (In Dubai, the lingua franca in taxis and the like is Hindi, but it’s a heavily modified version, replete with English and Urdu thrown in, along with a bit of Arabic by the side :D))

Oh and the English Literature exam was great! :D

Poems were “An Elegy written in a Country Churchyard” by Gray, “Prayer Before Birth” by MacNeice, and surprisingly enough, and appropriately enough for this thread, “Journey of the Magi”, by Elliot, T.S. of the name. :D

Daily Round Up: 67 posts. Fair dinkum, as the Aussies say…

I don’t have an accent in my Hindi, but cricket is not exactly the most popular thing here.

I know the standard rules of cricket, but I don’t know what an ODI or a test is. Can someone explain it?

Well, That explanation is specifically for Americans:)
ODI matches last for 8 hours; Test matches last for 5 days- from 9 in the morning to 5 in the evening.

that’s the only difference?

Yeah. I team has two innings in a Test match v/s one in ODI.

okay, thanks

I have a horrible accent to my Hindi. (Hell, I have an accent to my English. It would be amusing if I didn’t have so much difficulty making myself understood.)
