The Indian Thread (TiT) # 15

People actually debate about these things? :P

I mean there is only the one true way of ‘u’ everywhere isn’t there.

And don’t even get me started on ‘s’ v ‘z’ :)

Ha ha, Shrivats. :stuck_out_tongue: An American friend of mine is trying very hard to convert me to Americanised spelling (her logic being that I’ll need it in college there), and I’m trying to resist (my logic being that I don’t especially care about losing a mark or two over spelling and syntax quibbles). It’s rather fun, really.

(And yes, my essays were as British as it is possible to be without being all cliched and going ‘I say, old thing!’, so let admissions make of that what they will!)

Angels stand testimony to the hellish disorder @ TiT

Syndrome 1 is the editing thing.

My American friends keep going “****** British spelling!” :). Especially one. When he’s polite, he says “silly” :).

Hey, some of us like the disorder! (At least, when it concerns Latin or literature or math or whatever.)

Hellish disorder? really? I thought we were just in plain old disorder. Or chaos, chaos’s a nice word.

Tantalus maybe? (Or that’s just reading too much Greek mythology)

@Noldo: I’ll grit my teeth and bear it while I’m there. si fueris Romae, Romano vivito more; si fueris alibi, vivito sicut ibi and all that jazz.

Or I’ll just keep a stiff upper lip and bite the bullet… (YPM’s really, really useful in everyday life)

Nooo… Shrivats and Noldo are being obscure again… halp!

Not that most American’s would appreciate the sacrifice I’m making though. (Catch me saying nucular though, and you have full freedom to shoot me/ do other terrible things. :))

To the uninitiated, this is The Indian thread. We have about 1000 languages of our own, but somehow, Latin’s the lingua franca here. :)

The lingua franca according to Shrivats and Noldo only. The rest of us are slightly normal-er.

Halp, or Holp! (Where did holp come from, Wodehouse? Can’t really remember…)

Kriti: It’s when in Rome… and so on *ad infinitum, et cetera, et cetera/i)

Nota Bene: Exempli Gratia being the above. :D

Ahh, Shrivats!

I’m going. I need to do calculus. I have my English exam coming up.

I think TheBoy is bas007. I’m almost sure.

Calculus is derived from Latin too you know…

As is, well English…

And Technology.

And Institute…

I’m not helping, am I?

I like that juxtaposition of sentences, Kriti – ‘I need to do calculus’, ‘I have an English exam’. Sounds like you’re blaming one upon the other. ;)

Or maybe I’m just sleepy and addled (what can I say? I go to bed early!).

And everything is derived from Latin, including ‘derive’. English totally beats up other languages in dark Manhattan alleys and steals their spare vocabulary and loose change. :D

And thus begins the Hercule Poirot phase of TiT… :D

Now who’s Hastings, and where are the little grey cells, mon amis?

(@Aritict: Miss Marple, I think, for next time’s message?
@Kriti: I’m sorry :))

Surely you mean ‘mes amis’, Shrivats? (Sorry, former French student here. :D)

And don’t get me started on the grey cells. Bloody Biology.

Je ne comprends pas Francais, I’m afraid. Sanskrit was more my cup of tea.

I actually like Bio. (Walks off gingerly, expecting volley of Irish/Catholic abuse a la the Departed :))

Hey I’m NOT bas…

I can barely read Hindi, so Sanskrit would’ve been out of the question. (Yes, I struggle with the Hindi alphabet even now. It isn’t funny!)

I’m not going to abuse you re. Bio. I’ll just be scared. (I understand none of it, and am thoroughly failing.)

I joined CC today, coz a fren told me to and found myself in the midst of this great upheaval, hope things are back to normal now… No, I’m definitely being drawn in the eye of the storm…
