Oh, I was thinking of buying the new iPhone! Looks like I will have to resort to some petty buttering now…

Similar ques^ will my samsung sghF480 work in the us? It ain’t quad band only tri band.
Thanks tippu harvard annirudhc.
I’d like some laptop in the 6-700 dollar range though if macs are what is required I’d spend the extra money. So plz suggest some lptps in tht range.
I don’t need the free iPod touch-

Did u realize the pg number -747 is most likely the plane (Boeingas y’all know) that’ll ferry us to our college locations-
just something I observed

The HP Envy 14 will be available in the coming weeks for USD 999. Go check the HP site for more information on this gizmo. It is a great laptop and probably worth the extra dollars!

Acer Aspire AS5740-6378

how important is battery life to a college student

Will a Motorokr E6 work? :-/

And does Mac as an OS make up for the fact that you get a lot lesser specs in terms of processor and graphics card for the same price?

I’d suggest you to go to [Deals2buy: Everyday hot deals and coupons](http://www.deals2buy.com) and [Woot : One Day, One Deal (SM)](http://www.woot.com)
they got pretty slick deals on laptops etc…

I’m sorry but Dell has perhaps one of the best build qualities out there. Especially their Studio XPS line. And the XPS warranty is awesome. They come to your dorm and replace stuff!

Buy a Dell if you like it. They’re one of the best looking PC’s.
HP’s are really cheap and have a ton of features but they look flimsy and plasticky. They’re also prone to crashing…

Macs are the best though. I had never used a Mac before EVER but I took the plunge and brought one, and boy… I can’t even think of going back to PC’s…
I was forced to use Bootcamp for CAD though but that’s because I was in the Solar Car team…

Also Mac’s have the best battery life. 6.5 hours with wi-fi…

Most people have either Dell’s HP’s or Mac’s. At Northwestern, Apple has a 50% market share…

In my experience

Most important features:
Battery life, back-lit keyboard, size of trackpad/mouse/whatever you call it

Features you think are important but are useless:
CD drive [believe me], anything gaming related [welcome to college guys]

Just get anything with even a decent graphics card and a 2.2Ghz+ processor and you’ll be fine. Anything design related/graphics intensive stuff will be done on the 21" behemoths you’re computer lab probably has

Oh and don’t even bother getting anything above a 15". Most people have a 13" from what I’ve seen.

And whatever I’m saying is just from what I’ve seen and heard from my friends here and at other uni’s.

Hey Prateek - Looks like you’ve posted after a while! My comment on the Dells was primarily based on the user and editor reviews that I have read over the internet on websites such as Engadget, Gizmodo, Laptop, CNET et cetera. In fact, Brown, ironically, has a strategic partnership with Dell where the offer you Dell laptops at fairly cheap prices (I am not sure about other places!)!

Prateek, has the Mac caused you any worry with the engineering software available in the market? A lot of people hold the opinion that a Windows laptop is the best option for CS/Engineering majors. What are your thoughts?

Also, which Mac model do you use?

ahhh lady gaga will be at her sis’s grad inna few hours

You’ll might find this difficult to digest, but the USA does control the earth, and Apple controls the tech world.

Anyway.

Why does NYU not offer Engineering? >.<

Because the world is not enough.
Mac it is, then.

ans, have you used boot camp?

I haven’t found any problems with software. Nor do I foresee any problems. But then again I’m a MechE.

For CS majors as long as you’re installing windows you should be fine.

I’ve got a 13" Pro. 2.53 GHz

prateek, Did you get a student discount for Windows? What flavor of Windows did you install? Thanks.

Yeah, I got a student discount . It’s 65 for the professional, which I have.

^ are you headed to Tulsa, OK?

Wait… Tulsa? Me? what?

^ Don’t you guys have to get that solar car moving from Evanston to Tulsa or something like that? Perhaps it has already taken place. I got interested in what you mentioned in an earlier post. That’s all. (I didn’t mean to stalk you).
