The Indian Thread (TiT) #18

@Aniruddh: As promised, check your email for the response!

I have never had programming in OS X. You will run into trouble with Microsoft languages but otherwise I am a happy programmer.

So, being a prospective CS major, is it advisable to get a MacBook Pro? Don’t get me wrong, I love Apple, I love the machine, and completely drool over it!

Yeah, definitely! Check out [Eclipse.org home](http://eclipse.org) for an IDE that supports almost all main languages or Netbeans.

Yay! Another Eclipse user on TiT!

you can buy macbook and use it on dual boot with windows. You get the best of both worlds. I think instead of a macbook pro 17 you can buy alienware. Better config similar price atleast in india.

Alienware/Dell support is the crappiest I have ever seen. Apple has one of the best tech supports. I had a problem with my laptop and they overnighted it to their service center fixed it in a day and overnighted it back.

They even changed a few things I didn’t know had problems.

I know that we can indeed run Windows on a Mac via BootCamp, but I am not too sure of the performance that it would deliver. I really do adore the Mac. It is undoubtedly the most amazing laptop out there. But my reasoning is: If all my work will be done on Windows, why do I need to get the Mac in the first place?

Also, I was considering the 15 inch Core i7. What do you say about this?

hmm since the debate on laptop has started
which company should you go for? Dell, lenovo, asus?.. Dell seems the most cost effective and quite popular too.
I’ll go for atleast i5 processors.

ps: I hate macs :p

I have the 15 inch i5 MBP. Its sweet. Windows performs better on this (I play games on it sometimes) than the native windows laptop I had.

That’s good to hear! So, what is the kind of battery life that you get while using Windows on your Mac?

i agree apple service is good but dell isnt that bad either. Now surely for me nothing stands above i7 920 + two gtx 260 cards in sli. The point i was trying to say are macbooks arent the most cost effective. Overpriced according to me. 1,32,000 INR for 17 inch macbook pro with gt 330’m’ doesnt go well for me

You should compare the prices in dollars. To each his own. I think the Alienwares are two bloated and sort of overpriced. I do like their m11x though. In the long run you get what you pay for. Apple quality, service and standards need no introduction.

And from what I have seen of Dell Service - they are really terrible. Almost as bad as HP. Google Alienware support problems.

id better go with dell than get robbed by apple :p

Will the i3 330 or 430m be enough for ev and basic gaming? Coz I read on some site it will be. Or should I go for an i5? The i7 is waaaaay out of my league. Is a 512mb ati radeon(spelling) enough?

Yes it is. It runs COD MW2 well! And I initally went for the 13 inch MBP but I had extra cash so I upgraded to the 15. The 13 is perfect for mobility on campus.

Suit yourself AkshayM. If something breaks, we will see who robbed who :P

the vram of a graphics card doesnt say much, 512 is enough but the thing really matters is the number of stream processors, my current pc(which i dont get to use :frowning: ) has a radeon 4350 with 1 gb vram but still it it barely able to run crysis at decent framerates. MW2 runs at low settings fine. Fear runs on low-medium settings. I generally use custom settings to its hard to say exactly. And yeah the processor is c2d @ 3.16ghz. And the laptops usually sport mobility versions of these cards and have even lesser SP’s so you cant really tell by the vram. And yeah playing these games is all about eye candy, so at low settings i didnt get much fun out of it. Ahh… Crysis…

5 out of 6 of my aquarium fishes have died one by one!!! :frowning: is my aquarium cursed???

^ what do u have? or what did u have?

did u get them recently?

i had a blue siamese fighter, two angelfish, one bubble eyed goldfish, and two well the shopkeeper called them sharks but i dont know if they were really sharks they had some whiskers on their chin i think they were labeo but i dont know exactly wat they were but they were incredibly fast, i bought them in intervals of a few weeks, well my aquarium is a month and a half old. Initially i had the fighter and the two angels, but the fighter fought so i exchanged it for the bubble eyed, it all went well then 2 weeks after that the angels stopped eating and died a day later, then after a week the bubble eye was showing signs of tail fin rot so i added the medications and it healed and was well, and a week after that it too died in the same way as the angels, then i bought the sharks and now even they are dead…
