The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

What an industry…

[Survey: On Wall Street, Crime Still Pays | The Exchange - Yahoo! Finance](Survey: On Wall Street, Crime Still Pays)

“The financial services industry is nothing but a bunch of crooks, swindlers and con artists … at least in the view of many Americans. And it appears that this long-held but unfortunate stereotype may not be too far off the mark, according to survey results released this week by law firm Labaton Sucharow LLP.
In fact, things may be even worse than we realized.
The study, which polled 500 financial service professionals in the U.S. and United Kingdom, found that 24 percent of them believe that engaging in “unethical or illegal conduct” is necessary to succeed in finance, while 26 percent copped to having firsthand knowledge of shady dealings in their own workplaces. The survey also found that 39 percent of financial services workers believe their competitors have taken illegal or unethical shortcuts in their work. And remember, these respondents are speaking about their own chosen profession.
Just wait, it gets better.
A full 16 percent of respondents said they would commit a crime on the job (in this case, insider trading) if they knew they could get away with it. Sixteen percent! And what would motivate otherwise upstanding professionals to bend the rules to this extent? Not surprisingly, it all boils down to the money. A third of respondents said that they believe their firm’s compensation plans and bonus structures create pressure to “compromise ethical standards or violate the law.”
In other words: cheating pays.”

^^^There was a poster who said just this many times in this thread…^^^

:)…

Well…I am almost out. :)

My biotechs are hanging in there… :)

Local construction is picking up speed… A few previously deserted developments are now booming with life.

Biotechs are one of the hottest groups in the market.

Buffet almost sounds bearish - basically growth is slowing down to near nothing.

Also seeing several good sized subdivisions in the townsip we live under construction…I think builders are happy with the interest rate environment, and if they “qualify” for loans, it is a good idea to take advantage of them…That said, i hope their bets on construction work out, though i am not sold on it…

I am glad to hear that Buffet said the Fed has done what it can.

Dad II…how do you have cash in your 401K?

We have cash in H’s 401K equivalent as well. We also have some index funds.

My 401K has two short-term bond funds which are as close as you can get to cash.

It also has the Fidelity Brokeragelink option which gives you access to any mutual funds, stocks, bonds and ETFs.

He probably meant a stable value fund or money market fund like Fidelity Cash Reserves.

Yes, it is a “stable value fund” ^^ thank you

Should holding NOK be considered outright gambling now?

A bit better then bettiing the 6 or 8 on the crap table

Nokia is essentially a lottery ticket now. Look at the income statement and balance sheet for the last three or four years - the trends aren’t encouraging.

Amazon is looking to enter the smartphone market where they don’t care whether or not they make a profit on the hardware. They might even accept a loss on the product. Very hard to compete with that - especially when you’re not known as a good innovator.

Will the Amazon phone have a one click shopping button? ;)

Interesting chart. I really do not like the feel of this market. It reminds me of 2008.

http://kingworldnews.com/kingworldnews/KWN_DailyWeb/Entries/2012/7/12_Citis_Fitzpatrick_-_Stocks_to_Plunge_Another_15_to_20_files/KWN%20Fitzpatrick%2049.jpg

I spoke to a spouse of a Nokia employee.

If your tech company was tanking and you had marketable skills, what would you do? A lot of the value of tech companies is the skills and knowledge of their employees. What is the future value of a company where their best and brightest are looking for other opportunities?

JPM had much better than expected earnings but it’s only up a little bit. surprising.

S&P up 15. What’s up with that?

Anyone ever bought US gold coins? I want to buy them with as little overhead as possible. Most gold coin sellers seem to have big mark ups but I am not sure.
