The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

The traffic would impact me if I drive on weekends or nights. It’s mainly caused by a big border shopping mall that attracts folks from Massachusetts in droves.

No, it’s in Nashua, NH. If it were in Boston, there wouldn’t be a problem selling it.

However long I wanted to wait. I’d just sell it below market if I were in a hurry.

Equity Residential just bought a property in San Mateo and apparently there was a bidding war for it. The bought a place a while ago in Palo Alto (the bad part) - I guess because it is near Facebook - and they are raising rents where they can. Watching what’s happening with apartments can give you an idea of what is happening with housing.

Yup. We had that in Boston in 2011.

I should take a trip there. Haven’t had a proper vacation in a long time.

Ok. I don’t know Nashua at all.

What did your daughter think of SF?

Goog vs Amzn

<a href=“Google Charges Retailers to Appear on Shopping Site - The New York Times”>Google Charges Retailers to Appear on Shopping Site - The New York Times;

Loved it there after getting used to the hills. It helps that my sister covered all of her expenses and live in a great place. SF is great if you don’t have to worry about $$$$.

I am glad your daughter loved it.

You are right. SF is great if you don’t have to worry about money.

It does take a little time to get used to the hills. It is heathy to walk the hills as you know. It was easier to walk the hills years ago. Now, the joints don’t like walking downhill.
SF is such a small city. A person can cover quite a bit of it by foot.

Your daughter has a nice aunt.

<a href=“As Low Rates Depress Savers, Governments Reap the Benefits - The New York Times”>As Low Rates Depress Savers, Governments Reap the Benefits - The New York Times;

I think this is a very good article. I hate it. :)

After ww2, interest rates were below inflation for 30 years. I don’t remember this, but if we have inflation above interest rates for 30 years, I am not going to be too happy.

And the writer points our that the economy was stronger after ww2 than it is now. If that continues, then corporate profits are going to be subpar, and stock prices are going to sell at below average multiples for a long time.

Get ready for gasoline prices to go even higher and screw up the economy even more. The Fed has done it again.

I don’t know what happened to PhillyFed, but…13,500 before 12,000.

Sure looks that way right now.

Oops. We’re already there!

Sold GOOG and NKE today. NKE is the only thing on my watch list that was down today, even after the Fed. On GOOG, I’ve made enough and now I’m just holding AAPL, QLD, GG, PBA, ORCL. Holding AAPL, ORCL, PBA, ECA, NEM in my wife’s account.

BCEagle91 do you think CRM a threat to ORCL?

yes - 13500 before 12000!!!

Do I keep my core positions? It’s difficult to sell when the they’ve all reached multi-yr highs and everything’s melting up. Am I a hog about to get slaughtered next year and thereafter?

I plan on holding my positions and adding on a pullback. I expect that the fiscal cliff will be avoided. I also expect that we will hit the old highs in the s&p within 6 months. I tried to buy jpm calls immediately at the fed announcement but something was wrong with schwab. I ended up buying them in etrade 15 minutes later and .6 higher.

It’s not an area that I follow.

I guess because I am a buyer and not a seller, I don’t like these higher stock and bond prices. :)

I think Bernanke is doing a good job explaining his position. I think he is leaving out the part where the govt has issued a lot of debt and benefits by lower rates.

We are not going to see the ramifications of Bernanke’s policies for many years. I know there are arguments about what Bernanke is doing, but nobody knows how this is going to play out.

As far as trading goes, the last couple of times QE was enacted, volatility fell. Looks like volatility measures are faling again.

Just talking trading, declining volatility isn’t great.

I heard something pretty interesting, at least I think it is interesting. One of the larger hft firms has not had a losing day in over 10 years. I am talking after expenses. Not one losing day. If that is true, that is pretty amazing.

As far as holding stocks, if you are going to hold the stocks for over 10 years more, why worry about the fluctuations?

The stocks I am going to hold for 10 more years or more, I don’t even look at where those stocks are trading.

I guess if we got a bubble going, I would look at the stock prices.

I sold IMAX because I talked myself into selling. That was not an issue I expected to hold for 10 years.

I wish I rebought ANR instead of selling puts in ANR. That is the downside of selling puts. If a stock rises a lot, you miss out on the gains.

I really should be pulling everything out of the market now - I’ve got enough but I guess I’m a greedy pig who’ll get slaughtered down the road.

I have an account that is just selling puts, its my “income” account. There have been a number of times that I would have been better off being assigned. However I look at it from the standpoint of this money would have been in a bank acct earning cr**, so I’m still better off.
