I don’t know exactly what he’s doing. I’m not in his league - he’s an infinitely more sophisticated investor than I am.

There is opportunity. Your co-worker may find something.

He works here part time and spends the rest of his time trading. He mentioned something about rate of change of the vix and pair trades (which I guess lots of people are doing). He’s a quant at heart and goes through all the mathematical papers on this stuff.

That’s cool.

Sounds like he does due-diligence homework.

I think that the vast majority of moonlighting traders just look at it, wing it and get clobbered.

I just wing it (and do alright) but then again I don’t have a mechanical system set up that does a few thousand trades a week like this person does.

Your co-worker is trading thousands of times a week?

That is a lot.

Anyone have any experience with Interactive Brokers? I’m looking at a strategy that would require daily small trades in order to maintain the proper hedging ration and am trying to figure out a way to avoid being eaten alive by transaction costs.

Everybody I know that uses them loves them. I’m just too lazy to try new brokers (I have accounts at three of them).

The people I know that use IB are happy with IB.

Today was the first day of my forced retirement.

Instead of being surrounded by screens, I just sit around with an Ipad.

Talk about sensory underload. I can see I am going to miss quite a bit of information.

I will eventually pick up a pc because tablets aren’t ready for prime time trading.

But for now, I did one trade and did not look at the market.

I guess the market was down today.

You’re on forced retirement? Why and what are you going to do?

I can’t really go into the details. Nothing bad. I just can’t say. My services are no longer necessary. I think I can say that. :)

So no more association with a trading firm. Been there. Done that.

I am slowly going to know less and less about what is going on in the industry.

I will have more time to trade for myself, but I am not going to trade much. There will be days when I don’t look at the market.

I don’t know what I am going to do. As I said in the retirement thread, I joined a gym. I will get in better shape. That I know.

The rest…I will just see how things work out. Maybe, I will be like the Seinfeld Show. Do nothing.

Well - Good Luck!

Thanks.

Do you like your job?

What do you see in your future?

I hate my job at this stage. I plan on working 2 more years and then 1/2 time for a year or so. This may not be possible as right now my company has so much work. They’re trying to increase my department which currently has around 300 people by another 100 in 3 months which they most likely can’t. Also space is at a very high premium so they’ll be shrinking office space. I know a number of people looking to work part time but don’t think they’ll be able to because of the work load situation. Maybe in a few years that will change. My plan on retirement is to trade 1/2 time and volunteer or tutor in an inner city school. I don’t feel at this stage, I’ve made my mark on the world. I need to do this in some way. I’m also in the process of writing a book.

I can see why your employer might have a problem with employees switching to part time.

What is your book about?

The book is about my son.

Ahhhhhhh…

That’s really deep.

Ok.

Good luck to you.

Are you close to finishing the book?

How is your son doing?

I’ve basically just started. He died in June.
