For aapl, my breakeven was 551.85. Selling a 520 call, buying a 535 call, selling a 555 call and buying back the 565 call = 551.85 +1.9-19.35+13.1-7.15+5.3 = 545.65 for breakeven. Max gain = 9.35, max loss = 10.55 to 500 on the 19th. Still not great but a bit better than what it was.

Do you have the selliing of the 535-510 put spread in your calculations?

no. Why would I do that? Don’t I lose my protection? I’m way too confused - this is above my pay grade. I’m calculating this incorrectly. If instead of selling the 520 call, I sell a 480 call, it looks like my breakeven drops to 551.85 +1.9-43.85+13.1-7.15+5.3 = ~521

If you want the downside and the upside, it is going to be very expensive…

If you sell the 480 calls instead of the 520 calls, you are going to lose the upside profit potential…Your downside will be better…

If you do what I suggested…you will still have large downside…about the same as you have now, your potential profit will be about the same…a little better…but you will make the profits at lower stock prices because your breakeven drops. Your odds of making money go up.

You shouldn’t do what you don’t understand though.

I don’t understand your last calculation…selling the calls at 480 and keeping the put spread?

What happens if aapl closes at 535?

You lose 10 bucks on the 535-50 put spread, lose 7 bucks on the 535- 555 call spread,

You lose 27 bucks on the 480 calls and you make 5 or so on the 565 calls…

I don’t know what you are doing with these calculations but is that what you want?

Do not do anything unless you understand your profit and loss at particular stock prices.

Don’t do anything I have said…

Thanks for the input - I’m going to have to think about this tonight at home - I got too much work to do here.

Whos gonna step up to the plate on herbalife?

This is an incredibly quiet day. No wonder the vix is 13.

My short tlt calls are going out worthless, so I sold the next weeks 121 calls.

My Covered short aig calls are going out worthless. I would prefer aig at 36, but we don’t always get what we want. I sold some 36 level calls that expire next week. I sold some feb32 puts in aig.

I am going to trade some spy next week…just don’t know what yet…

Really quiet week.

I am hearing mixed things on the economy. Looks kind of flat.

These volumes are unreal. So low…

Usually when the market goes up, and when new highs are made, they trot out all the superbulls who claim to have been bullish all along and raise their end of year projections, ie Dow 18000 by year end!!! But recently I have seen several very bearish articles, mostly suggesting retail will pile in and create too much froth and a top and a major correction. So using double reverse psychology, that is bullish!

:)…

the retail money ie the dumb money isn’t necessarily so dumb at all.

$34 B inflows in the week ending January 9. Second-highest inflows in history. The retail investor is getting off the sidelines.

^^I don’t know - there is a lot of negativity surrounding aapl and its product launches. Revenue would be enhanced because of more products but the bears are talking about margin compression. I still expect a short term pop in the next week or two. I own too much tech - aapl, goog, qcom, qqq and asml options. The only one I have any confidence in is ASML, it has a very wide moat and the barrier into entry is gigantic.

I happen to have a few apple stocks that I would like to unload if I knew when.

It has been well known for a long time that aapl options at expiration behave the way it is described in the article. I’ve seen strategies as to how to play it.

Does it influence long term investors? Apple is the last individual stock I own. It was bought sometime ago and has LTCG even at present share prices. I don’t like the daily drama and would like to liquidate it all sometime soon.

Over 50% of my 401K money is in S& P index fund now. Got in at 13xx, and again at low 14XX. I am thinking to let it run to Late April. Sell in May and go away.
