The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

That quote must have been made by an idiot

I think that there was a lot of fear over the HFT guys several years ago but they never bothered me - I don’t trade in their time frame and they would eventually eat each other. Same old Wall St - something works well, it gets copied, then it doesn’t work so well.

We lost an engineer to HFT a few years ago. I wonder what he’s doing now. His long-term goal was med school.

I wonder if the guy did go to medical school.

“Same old Wall St - something…”

That’s right.

There are going to be very few hft firms left. They will thrive when business is good.

For the trades most of us do hft is not a problem. They save us money. The hft furms do cut the profit margins for some trades so there are some traders that are affected. Hft hurts traders that like to arbitrage. Many of those opportunites are diminished or gone.

I haven’t looked to see what the market is doing today. I guess I will look. :)

I am not sure I can watch those… I gave my youngest the pc.

Interest rates and fed actions are inflating asset prices as we know…

I saw this story today…

I sold some 750 goog puts today…

Better to provide a description - I don’t do unknown video at the office. I really don’t do video, even if known.

BTW, here’s an oddball economic indicator.

I use a particular brand of tennis balls along with several people that I play with. I bought six cans yesterday at Dicks and I thought that the price was odd when I got to the car. It was $26.50 so they worked out to $4.40/can.

Most tennis balls cost $2 - $2.50/can. The brand I buy is the best out there (I’ve tried and asked about lots of others). They used to sell for just a little more than regular balls. It appears that they didn’t realize how much they can sell these things for and slowly increased the price to where they think the market is. Most tennis ball prices have been static for decades. So I’m going to buy them in bulk ($3.58 including shipping) - they’re still more expensive than regular balls but the last twice as long and they have better playability.

I like anecdotes like the tennis ball anecdote.

I am putting this here for myself… I can’t remember these requirements…

These requirements don’t look stringent to me…

I was wondering why my acct cash and trading amounts weren’t changing much when I was selling goog puts…

I sold a couple of aapl 420 puts that expire tomorrow.

I am talking in the future now. Not today. I am looking at the volumes of some of the more successful equity Etfs. Spy, qqq, iwm, tna, Tza, Sso, etc.
The volume is terrible. The volume in aapl is very low.

Where is the public trader or investor?

I don’t see them in equities.

So…
What happens when the Fed pulls back?

I see another potential

bubble in stocks and in real estate forming.

What is the fed going to do when housing prices recover?

Stocks have recovered and rates are still near zero.

Who is going to be the buyer when the fed is done?

Like I said, I don’t see the public participating.

I kind of agree with this…

Both the Wall Street Journal and the Asian electronics supply chain publication DigiTimes published reports claiming that Microsoft has cut prices of Windows 8 and Office 2013 in an attempt to spark sales.

“They’ve always held [pricing] close to the vest,” said Allan Krans, an analyst with Technology Business Research, in a Wednesday interview. “They’ve always been insistent on maintaining that pricing, but a discount makes sense, given the holiday season, the back-and-forth with the OEMs and the slow start to the Surface.”

Not a good sign for Microsoft/Intel.

Doesn’t look like good news for msft.
Thanks for the link.

Security is a booming area. Armed forces are looking for people too.

Based on the jobs report, are you buying, selling or do nothing tomorrow?

I don’t know what BCEagle 91 is planning, but I intended to sleep thru the number. :)

Then I am going to look for more premium to sell…you know …the usual.

What are u planning doct?

I don’t really plan to do anything with the jobs report but read it. The weekly first time claims numbers have been decent and I’d expect the employment numbers to be - not too bad.

If the number is worse than expected, then QE continues longer. If it’s better than expected, then QE continues. If the number is wildly better than expected - then we better watch out.

I’m not certain yet. If there is a sell - off, I’ll buy some stuff and sell puts in something I want to own but I still think is somewhat expensive. If the market goes up, I don’t know what I’ll do. Right now I’m lagging the market and getting ready to run some stuff to figure out why.

Are u lagging with your stocks or your put selling?
