The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

I bought the 5/24 qqq 62 calls - I like to buy high and sell low. I also sold a 5/3 goog 805 put for 1.3

High to higher… :)

I sold 6 aapl 410 puts for 0.15

If aapl drops that low this week…which I think is extreeeeemely unlikely…I think I will do a butterfly with half and roll the other half.

I still have the 405 puts offered…

I had also thought about selling fb 5/3 24 puts but didn’t.

I was looking at those.

Just don’t think the small reward is worth it.

It may be a good buy if it drops enough on tomorrow’s earnings. With my luck this year, it will go straight up.

Lol…

I am having a hard time finding things I like.

Tsla is in the 50s now. It was 40 a short time ago.
Nke is a slow mover but it is up.

Goog volatility has collapsed.
Aapl vol is dropping.

I am going out further in time so the premium I sell is from options that are still otm. Instead of selling weeklys, I am selling stuff 2 to 4 weeks out. He’ll I may even go out 6 to 8 weeks.

Probability of success goes down though as I sell longer term stuff.

I sold premium in fb and made money. I don’t like selling premium before earnings. When I am short premium I don’t want big moves and earnings results can cause big moves. I sold fb puts because the puts expired before earnings and the stock had good news. The trade had a high probability of Success. If I sell something for .10 10 times and the 11th time the puts go against me by a 1.00, I am not getting anywhere.

Selling puts that expire after earnings is when you can lose that 1.00.

Those aapl 410 puts I sold today has over a 90 percent rate of success. Those were the riskiest puts I sold today. Lol

If something has more upside than put premium, then I don’t need a 90 percent success rate… But it would be nice. Lol

I was talking to my daughter’s boyfriend. He is so great. I hope she marries this guy, but he mentioned some guy and said he was just a gambler. I didn’t have the heart to tell the boyfriend I am a professional gambler. I am a much better gambler than Omar Sharif in Funny Girl though. Lol

I never watched Funny Girl so I wouldn’t know what you’re talking about. The earliest gambler role I’ve ever watched in a movie was Gordon Gekko I think.

Funny Girl is great if you like Barbara Streisand And I do like her.

The performance of Don’t Rain on my Parade from Funny Girl is fantastic.

I liked Wall Street. I thought is was well done. I liked Michael Douglas and Charlie Sheen and whoever was naked in that movie. It has been along time since I have seen the movie but I think the movie got the morals right. Wall Street is not a moral place. The pretending that Wall Street is I find annoying but I guess it sells.

Look at the people getting arrested that are involved with Steve Cohen.

The only movie I saw with Barbra in the cast is Meet the Fockers but I do like her song “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers.”

I got TJX and NKE last Monday I think. I’m happy with both. I had wanted both for a while and just dove in.

IRL, Omar Sharrif was a Master bridge player. He was also paid a lot to show up at championships. My dad got to play with him.

Now, back on topic.

Bookworm, You are right. I was really talking about his character in the movie. I would be No contest for him in bridge.

That is very cool that your dad played bridge with him.

Was your dad a great bridge player?

My dad was a Master. He met Omar at a contest in Vegas. He generally didn’t travel for tournaments, but did a few to please his partner. He was VERY good at any card game, chess or checkers.

Once, when I was with the folks in Vegas, my dad played blackjack. He counted cards, just like he did with bridge. He “let” my mom play, who lost most of his winnings. I like to think his math genes traveled onto the worm.

:)

That is nice bookworm.

A very nice story. I take it the math genes did make it to the worm…

What is going on with pba?

Well, it was up 2.21% today and it has been a monster. It’s not a tech stock so it doesn’t move like GOOG or AAPL. I personally have a lot of faith in the company but I do not have an exit strategy. Exiting would also be a pain because of capital gains. I like the dividends but the yields must be around 5% or lower now. It’s up about 16.7% for the year and add 5%/3 for dividends. I have had it in the back of my mind that I would have this problem someday but I expected it to be later this year or sometime next year. I have looked for a similar stock but I haven’t found one that I trust enough. It has been a hard stock to buy on pullback as you can see on the chart and I’ve been reluctant to chase things lately.

I checked my YTD returns and I’m at 16.3% right now. That’s with about 15-20 percent in cash. This market is absolutely crazy.

As Ferguson points out, the media has blown out of proportion the error in Rogoff and Reinhardt’s paper - something that I heard the UMASS researchers who found the error also pointed out on Bloomberg yesterday.

Pba is a nice winner. Congrats on pba.

I find the comments in a lot of this stuff quite interesting.

I have noticed a lot of earnings winners among the insurance industry. PRE, AFSI this week. Don’t know why?
