The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

I think that Samsung just got their Octa chips in 28 nm - their volume stuff is on 32 nm. It seems somewhat optimistic that they’re going to jump straight to 14 in a relatively short period of time.

Not sure if I’m alone, but half the fun of playing a board game is the fact it’s not a computer game. Maybe once they have holograms down, and I can have a game of virtual monopoly (complete with a relative embezzling from the bank) across the country, count me out for one of those machines.

“BC, to explain a little bit on that Samsung article. For this particular process (companies do have many different processes and lines to manufacture their chips), they are doing front end (FEOL) with new 14 nm equipments and the back end (BEOL) with their old 20 nm process. To clarify, the front end is the lower level layers that form the active devices and silicon gates where the switches and logic circuits reside. The BEOL or back end are the interconnect where the wires are patterned and deposited to connect all those devices created by the front end.”

I don’t think they have an euv tool, so are they going to do 14 nm by doing double patterning which has a lower wafer yield and higher cost?

Part of the fun of Monopoly is marching your token along the board and handing out cash to other people.

[“The rumor of a new Chinese #1 system of approximately 40 or more petaflops, if true, is another major feather in the cap for the Intel MIC architecture,” said Addison Snell, CEO of Intersect360 Research. “But there are additional potential ramifications that are very interesting in what they could mean to the industry.”]

The second part sounds like the opposite of fun for someone that’s into trading. ;)

Well, you can hand out money if you’re the bank.

Looks like Samsung is having problems at 28 NM with their Octa processor. The Galaxy Note 3 is going to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon.

A nice example of a fast and furious huge vol decline chart is FNMA’s 5 min chart today. That is a chart I don’t want to see in any of my long positions.

My portfolio took a hit yesterday because I own KMB and MCD. I have no idea why KMB fell so much. I couldn’t find a story which is pretty unusual. KMB still up 17.8% ytd which gives you an idea of how much it was up before yesterday (at the highs it was up 25%) MCD still + 12% ytd.

A lot of stocks are stretched if you look at dividend coverage and other numbers. I was feeling bad for a few days about getting called out of all of my VZ and T.

That is a bizarre move in KMB. I can’t think of any fundamental reasons out there for the drop and I didn’t see chart-related stuff. That looks like a GMOH by a big player. Looks like all eyes are on the unemployment claims number today (which I don’t think is that big a deal at the moment).

Looks like Intel is delivering on it’s previous CC comments that it will show tablet design wins this summer.

“Sources from both Intel and Samsung have indicated that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 tablets will be powered by Intel Atom processors, according to a report in The Korea Times today. Inclusion in Samsung’s budget range of tablets will be a significant design win for Intel as it attempts to bring down the power usage of its chips to be more mobile friendly. The Tab 3 is expected to be unveiled at Computex next week.”

I spoke to a sister about the free phone thing. Apparently she just brought in a bank statement showing her SS deposit and that was enough to get the free phone. I don’t know where she brought her statement to though - was it a phone store or a government agency? My sister also agreed that the bank statement probably didn’t reflect her pension income and that she most likely brings in more than the minimum.

My sister also thinks that it’s wrong to exclude investment income. She works for the district court system in MA and doesn’t think that getting the free phone and service is the right thing to do if she’s over the legal limit. She doesn’t think that they should exclude investment income in the income calculation either. I’m hoping that she asks my mother on the pension thing. I also found out that she gets some low income energy assistance - income is probably validated in the same way.

If she needs additional income (and I don’t think that she does), she could just ask us.

SEC to vote next week that would require prime money-market funds to have a floating share price instead of a fixed NAV $1.

[SEC to Vote June 5 on Floating Share for Riskier Money Funds - Bloomberg](Bloomberg - Are you a robot?)

So this stable funds could now break the buck. I don’t know how this is good news to savers who have been crushed by ZIRP.

BCEagle, from your story it does look like it’s easy to get a free phone. I wonder if anyone can prove he has no income by just showing a bank statement with the lowest balance and point out that there is no income deposit at all for the past months?

I understand that you can get one of these free phones by self-certifying but I don’t know who you talk to. In my mother’s case, she apparently got certified with her bank statement. It seems to me that there are parties that give these to you that have a vested interest in giving out a lot of these, whether they are phone stores or government agencies.

There were many stories about Suzanne Bump (Treasurer or auditor) finding a ton of benefits fraud in Massachusetts and her determination that state agencies weren’t really doing much to police the fraud. That’s consistent with what I have heard.

Wow, that was an ugly sell off at the end of today. What caused it? Could it be last day in May and go away?

Supposedly it was rebalancing of the indices

IBD says Uptrent Under Pressure.

Rebalancing sound like a weak excuse.
