The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

That’s perceptive! There’s a selloff so there is pressure on the current trend - who would have guessed.

zero hedge dot com [they have the fed report on there if you open the story at the headline.]

I missed my chance to buy. It wasn’t down enough when I checked around 3 pm and didn’t place an order.

PG What does it say?

Very impressive graphics performance from Intel’s new Haswell Iris Pro. Take a look at some of the benchmarks against discrete graphics, especially the power consumption numbers. I showed the numbers to my daughter and she was amazed at how good the Intel stuff is.

I just spent some money this year on hardware. I got her a new graphics card (7790) and I got myself an external Firewire 800 SSD for my iMac. My iMac has a 27 inch screen but it’s slow and I want to speed it up with an SSD. These two things are about $350. My normal budget for electronics is $3K/year.

One other thing that I noticed about Haswell SKUs. Low prices. Their sweetspot Core i7 is $303 (somewhat more at retail). I bought the sweetspot Core i5 for my Sandy Bridge desktop a few years ago at the same price. So you can get a very good Core i7 for what a very good Core i5 cost two years ago. My guess is that most people would be fine with a Core i3 but sometimes it’s nice to have a ton of power if you have certain applications to run from time to time.

INTC is still cheap too. RBC came out with a target of $29 on Friday.

[AnandTech | Intel Iris Pro 5200 Graphics Review: Core i7-4950HQ Tested](<a href=“Intel Iris Pro 5200 Graphics Review: Core i7-4950HQ Tested”>Intel Iris Pro 5200 Graphics Review: Core i7-4950HQ Tested)

In working with my daughter on researching graphics cards, I asked her to consider power consumption. She didn’t know that new process generations mean that you can get more compute power while using less overall electricity. She also didn’t know about variable costs (wafers) dropping in cost with a new process. So she did some reading on this stuff and has a better understanding of the hardware side. Intel has a huge advantage over AMD and nVidia products because of their process advantage and Haswell is going to eat into their business even more. Intel doesn’t seem to care about the high-end of the graphics business but just naturally beating the other two on process and putting in the effort has to be draining their businesses.

BCEagle91, thanks for the links…

My intc ideas have not changed and I don’t think they are going to change.

I said intc will be higher on Jun 3 then whenever I wrote that post. Since Jun 3 is Monday, i am extremely confident intc will be higher than when I wrote that post.

There is a bullish areticle in Barrons that won’t hurt. :)

I also had a vision of where intc was going and I am going to be long int
for 2 to 3 years, if not more. My vision is based on Blink. We will see. I realize that a 2 to 3 year time frame is a little long for some of you. That is ok. I read that Jon Najarian once said if he held an option position for more than 30 seconds, that was too long. I think that was in the old days.

This leads me to a question…a question for poetgrl. How do option market makers make money these days? I don’t mean give away any secrets. I mean do option market makers still arbitrage options against each other in the same option class? For example, do market makers arb spy options against each other? The bid and offers are so tight I wonder if arbing is over.

Obviously, I understand deltas, vega, theta, etc…and various strategies…

I am curious about arbing when the markets are so tight. I think my profit margin was a little too low to make money on options that were .01 or .02 wide.

I am not going to be a market maker again…

I am just curious. When I look at these markets, I think what the hell?

I like this…

<a href=“Dmitry Itskov and the Avatar Quest - The New York Times”>Dmitry Itskov and the Avatar Quest - The New York Times;

I’m not really trying to convince you - there are a few that are interested in the company for investing and some interested in the technology so I just post what’s happening. There is a lot of buzz about Haswell this weekend.

I don’t know what blink is.

I haven’t been on for awhile, and I mentioned Jun 3 and Intc previously so I thought I would just update my thoughts. I know you aren’t trying to influence me, BCEagle91. I would think others appreciate your posts as I do.

This is Blink.

[gladwell dot com - blink](<a href=“Malcolm Gladwell – Home | Malcolm Gladwell”>Malcolm Gladwell – Home | Malcolm Gladwell)

I have made several trades based on blink and lost money. I make money when I stick to my trading indicators and hope they are right.

In fact, my instincts told me to buy the S&P friday afternoon, but my indicators said otherwise and I didn’t buy. Had I bought, I would have lost a lot of money.

Razorsharp, I guess my Blink is better than your Blink. Lol

Yes, you win again! Maybe my blink needs some glasses.

Speaking of books, I am reading The New Digital Age (haven’t finished yet). It’s pretty good stuff. It’s about the future and technology but it’s written so that the reader does not need BCEagle91 to translate it for us.

[The New Digital Age - Reshaping the Future of People, Nations and Business](http://www.newdigitalage.com/)

Razorsharp, I am going to pick up that book. Looks good to me…

Thanks.

My son is trying to get a project at work to scale. It relies mostly on open source software so support isn’t great. The options that they’ve looked at are cost $2 million for licenses + maintenance, or $3 million for three years, or … My son is somewhat shocked that this software costs so much - especially since he wrote such a system from scratch in a year.

I offered my help in getting it to scale, basically by getting a better back-end plugged in. I don’t know whether or not it will work but it will look impressive if it does.

BCEagle91, good luck to your son and you on the project.

No progress; I didn’t realize how hard it is to setup his environment.

I did change my home environment though. I have the 27 inch iMac in the center, a 20 incher on the right driven by the iMac and my Nehalem on a 21 inch monitor on the left. I was able to get rid of the speakers on the Nehalem as I’m using the integrated iMac’s speakers. The external SSD comes on Wednesday so the iMac will be a lot faster soon. I don’t really need all of the horsepower of the Nehalem most of the time and it would be nice to even drive the third monitor off the iMac but it will only drive one external display unless I get a USB adapter. It’s pretty amazing that you can do so much with old hardware. I wouldn’t mind getting a small Haswell box to play with AVX2. A Retina MacBook Pro would do the trick too.

BTW, Haswell has been getting rave reviews this weekend. Broadwell is a year away and we can expect more. It’s mainly a die-shrink from 22 nm to 14 nm and I think that it’s going to be focused on even lower power consumption and better graphics. Intel is killing everyone else in integer right now so there’s no real pressure to improve there. They should have the Atom version out too and I think that 14 nm is going to be the tipping point on phones.

BCEagle91, Did you buy some intc?

That was a good sale in pba and psec. Stocks tied to interest rates sold off.

Seriously? What marking genius came up with that? The chip looks amazing, but I am not sure about the name.

Any gold owners? Roubini is not favoring gold.

I have a small long position in INTC. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it at the moment.

Newegg is selling Haswell chips right now.

I wouldn’t mind a cheap desktop system with Haswell right now.

Intel up a buck this morning. Should have bought more last week. Oh well.
