The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

INTC having a rather nice day.

BCE, do you plan to stick with your FCX?

I bought FCX and NEM this morning and both are in the green. My motivation for buying FCX is in the link below. I bought NEM as well because it has a nice yield and it doesn’t have ADR tax issues.

BCEagle91,

I think that is a great post or link.

Ok, thanks I will read it. Why did you pick NEM? I’m looking at the miners and GG seems to have the best balance sheet to ride out a decline in gold prices.

Added: I think I understand now why you picked NEM.

I love GG but I apparently have too much foreign income to recapture withholding taxes via the foreign tax credit so I have been trying to scale back foreign dividend companies in taxable accounts.

I originally bought GG when it was about $5. It was at $22 recently and that was an absolute gift. I had typically bought it below $30 in the past for trading. IAG is my “gambling” gold miner. That thing can really move.

BTW, most people that I have sent that post to are really appreciative. Of course, they’re people in their 50s and 60s too.

I used to read the quarterly reports from GG and their Red Lake Mine had some of the richest yields for a junior back then. They aren’t really a junior anymore and I haven’t read the reports in probably a decade.

I also think that is a nice post, but I take issue with one of his points. He says that in considering whether to sell an income stock that has appreciated, you should be thinking about yield on original cost, rather than yield on current price. I think that that is wrong because in considering alternative income stocks, the potential income that you will receive will be determined by current prices, rather than the original cost of the stock that you are thinking about selling.

Of course, in doing the calculations you have to take into account the capital gains tax that you would have to pay on the stock that you are considering selling, which would reduce the amount that you can invest in any alternative.

I think that his dividend income is in the 7-figure area so taxes are probably a big issue for him.

You are right EMM1. I missed that.

I thought there was some bad news for apple and verizon today, but the news was ignored so I was wrong.

It was bad for Verizon and good for Apple.

Hedge funds…

I am not sure about that.

Apple’s sales are lower than expected…

That is not good…

I guess I didn’t do well compared to the hedge funds.

My results through June 30 are only 14.59%. I guess that puts me in third place.

I’m trying to decide whether I should try to salvage an old laptop. I misplaced the power cord but I can buy a used one for $15. I would have to thoroughly clean it out though and it would take me about an hour to do this. It’s an old Pentium 4 and it runs hot and crashes.

Why would you want to save that laptop?

It has a really nice screen. 1920x1200 in 15 inches. That resolution is hard to come by in 15 inches. I think that the Retina MacBook Pro is the only model that does that today. And they’re taking their sweet time to come out with a new model.

I may just bring a spare monitor into the office. It isn’t 1920x1200 but it is 1680x1050 and 20 inches and it should help.

Ok…

Motorola has a tough road ahead. The best hardware out right now is the HTC one and it isn’t selling that well.

Google has done well with the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus because these are good devices and they are cheap. I think that Google doesn’t want to give the moto stuff away.
