The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

That’s good thinking EMM1. But you could also sell naked the 4 puts for 1.80 that expire Jan 16, 2015. If the stock goes to zero you can lose 2.20 but if it stays at 4 or higher you get 1.80. It takes a long time to make money but he odds seem favorable that the company won’t go to zero.

One of the sites I looked at says the book value of ARIA is 1.37 and the cash per share is 1.59. Obviously, those could change over time but they look good now.

IWM breached 50D sma today. Testing the area now. Wonder if SPY will follow its steps.

DD recently shared about a group project from one of her classes from last semester: If you had $40,000 to invest, what would you invest in? Had to be a stock-market related investment–ie: couldn’t invest in real estate. They had to do the research and justify their choices. Goal was to protect the principal (within reason) while making money in the market over the long-haul.

So, I’ll throw that out to you…What would you choose for such an investment?

I would take the $40,000 and eight stocks with each stock position representing $5K. I would then select eight stocks from the list of Dividend aristocrats. I would look for rate of growth of dividends over time for each stock and make a “gut check” of whether that will likely continue. The stocks should be larger companies in the S&P 100. I might consider adding one foreign company with a dividend grow history.

I might also consider adding growth stocks to two of the eight positions. Maybe GOOG or AAPL.

DadII, re: Aria, maybe you want to take 1/2 off the table but the volume is strong on the green.

In addition to (or instead of) razorsharp’s ideas, I would think of PCEF.

Up until now, whenever there was speculation that the Fed was going to scale back their bond-buying, the market tanked.

Now they have officially announced it, and the market soared.

If the thought of it was bad, why is the reality of it good?

“If the thought of it was bad, why is the reality of it good?”

Maybe because it was completely expected, and the rate of cutback is slower than it could have been. Wonder if the market will keep going up for the year.

I have to admit I am so tired of hearing the fed say there is no inflation. Every time I go to the grocery store I suffer from sticker shock. Maybe the crap the fed buys does not go up but the things I buy have gone up 25 percent in the past two to three years.

“If the thought of it was bad, why is the reality of it good?”

Because Bernanke had to explain to boneheads once again that although tapering is going to happen, that they will keep interest rates low - something that has been said over and over again.

It has been expected for so long that it wasn’t going to have an impact except on the boneheads who had net short positions on the market and covered yesterday driving the market up.

The economy is getting better and qe isn’t as needed as in the past.

I love these guys! I can count on them all the time.

DadII, thank you for putting that you-know-what in my radar. It was your xmas gift! Your spec play truly paid off and in hindsight I wish I had bet the family farm instead of the gopher.

Dang, I wish I’d have read his post!

The purpose of this post is to test if the link below will work. Vine;

It’s been almost a year since we discussed bitcoin. So, if I decided to be a guinea pig last year and bought BTC via Mt. Gox then the coins have disappeared into the dark pools.

BTC news that is CC related: The supposed bitcoin founder Nakamoto is a physics grad of Cal Poly Pomona.

Oh boy… Sorry to read that.

Is there any talk of speculators getting some of their money back?

I have no idea.

<a href=“People Who Lost Money in Mt Gox”>People Who Lost Money in Mt Gox;

BTW, the bitcoin founder has nothing to do with the Mt. Gox implosion.

A secure Cryptocurrency exchange doesn’t exist yet. These places have been getting hacked since day 1. This is just the biggest one yet.

I remember a week ago or whenever it happened people were selling everything they could because you’re more likely to get money out of there than bitcoins. Whatever bitcoins are lost are almost certainly gone forever.

Ok… This is beyond me.

It is not doing you any good not to sleep.

Hopefully, you havent jeopardized everything. Doesnt sound like that. Sounds like you lost a good chunk of money.

I almost went broke in 1984. My wife and I were newly married. I couldnt sleep for a few nights. Spent a weekend in bed. It was tough to sleep in 1987 too,

I dont know you or your wife but I would tell your wife what is going on. She can probably feel that something is going on.

You still have a job, right? Your family is healthy I hope. Money is not everything.

Dstark, the quote is from a MT Gox customer in the Business Insider article not me. I am not a man. I am a wife.
