In vino veritas!
^^Why can’t I double like that post?
I shouldn’t have looked at this thread. DS announced last week that he is leaving his job at well known tech company to work for a startup . . . @-)
I’m getting a bit nervous about the market. I’m retiring in about two weeks and talk about sequencing risks :-??
Yesterday as I looked at my positions and how well they’re hedged, I realized that I have been a bit careless, didn’t hedge everything and since I’ve bought a lot over the past month or so am significantly overly leveraged on the long side. Something doesn’t feel right about the market.
I agree.
The only way I can get the market to go up is to buy a lot of puts
Lol
Sacrifice yourself for the rest of us, DocT.
I’ve worked at a bunch of startups over the years… some were successful (although none made it to IPO before being acquired), some weren’t. The ones that made it didn’t make me rich, sadly… the best one paid for a couple years of college for one of my kids. The worst one, I wound up working for free for several months while we tried to get funding, and failed.
If you have tech skills there are always companies hiring. Although it is getting tougher as I get older.
I am feeling negative right now. I can’t tell if it is because of the markets or because the IRS doesn’t have my time sensitive tax return. ![]()
I guess I am going to have to go through some self therapy. ![]()
So…
If you don’t want to see negative crap…maybe this should be skipped…
I should probably engage in something more positive right now.
I like your post. Very interesting.
My daughter is so incredibly positive. My son in law is positive. The unicorn private companies have been losing value since August. So, A few weeks ago, I asked my daughter if they saved 6 months of income. I am talking savings, not investments in stocks or whatever. She wasn’t sure. She he didn’t get back to me on this. Usually she would. Usually, I am positive. I don’t want to put my 59 year old thinking on my kids. So…I haven’t said anything.
I do think if somebody is going to work for these startups should build up some savings. I do know somebody who recently got fired from one of the unicorns. He does have savings so that’s good.
@dstark hang in there. Both D’s are millenniums and frugal but enjoying themselves. All are positive. Kids have a way of surviving.
Mine would say the same thing and would never get back to me.
Since I handle all the finance in my family, I am alarmed at how little my daughter knows about savings and investments and her lack of desire to learn. Her husband takes their privacy to the nth level.
Okay, there are some smart people on here. Can someone tell me why Deutsche Bank is trading at such a low price? What is going on?
@notrichenough – I have a feeling that my son’s path may end up being similar to yours. I find your post reassuring. He is pretty good at what he does, so I guess if this start up thing doesn’t work out, he’ll probably land on his feet.
Let’s see if I can remember everything without looking at my resume:
Started after college at a billion dollar public company
Went to a startup
Got bought by another large public company
Got laid off,
Went right into another startup
Got acquired
Got acquired again
Got acquired again. Same job, 4 companies.
Went to a startup.
Laid off after the co. ran out of money
Out of work for a few months
Went to a public company
Company closed the doors, laid off. Dotcom bust was around here.
Out of work for a few months
Went to a startup
Acquired by a medium sized public company
Acquired by a multi-billion dollar public company
Laid off, out of work for a few months
Went to a strange semi-public company
Went to a startup
Went to smallish private company
That’s 15 different companies over the course of my career. I think I got them all.
Fortunately my periods of unemployment did not coincide with DW’s, so we were never under any real financial pressure.
It’s been an interesting ride. B-)
Your post makes me glad my son’s got a government job.
LOL, NRE. That’s how my resume looks like - without the acquisitions.
Mostly, the cos I worked for went poof, and only 4 are still in business in some shape and form. My batting average for stock options was 0. Mr. fared better.
My scariest moment: on the day baby kiddo got into the college of her dreams, I lost my job. I opened my UTMA Etrade account and sold every share of stock we had in there. It was February 2008. Wisest trade I ever made to date.
We have talked about this. I own biotech stocks. What you wrote does not give me comfort. ![]()
“Mr fared betrer”
This should give you some comfort, dstark. He is in biotech, too.
