The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

The prevailing theory which I guess I agree with is that there is oil storage capacity issues

Ok. Thanks.

@Doct, so when is the oil drop going to be considered a positive for the country?

I agree with the thesis of the above article. The correlation of stocks to oil is absurd. The economy is nowhere near to what some are suggesting based on the huge drop in oil price.

@doschicos, that’s a good article.

The United States benefits by having lower oil prices. Yet…the US stock market is down.

Yes, it’s been driving me crazy (and poorer!) and it seems so counterintuitive, doesn’t it?

Yes it does. If sovereign wealth funds are selling, then the stock market drop makes a little sense. A little. We may find out after the fact what’s going on.

At this stage I’m at a loss as to what to do and am befuddled. A lot of my positions aren’t too good.

Maybe I’ll try hitting some “singles” like purchasing 2/19 xle 54 - 53.5 put spreads and selling 2/19 spy 174.5 - 160 put spreads for a a total of +~.03 after trading fees.

So BIL called DH in a panic the other day b/c of the market issues. Not sure if he was looking for some magic answer or a handout.

An interesting presentation: http://www.yardeni.com/pub/sp500corrbear.pdf

Its really easier to figure out bottoms when they have already been made.

We may need a lot of the worrywarts to sell to make a bottom.

I don’t know why the vix isn’t higher.

I am also not just saying this. When I am befuddled, I don’t trade.

Is anyone more that a little worried about what is happening in the world? Not just the market, but all the signs showing a good chance of a recession coming up. Thinking about doing some index options, just nothing but doom and gloom. Sounds like 2008 all over again.

Serves me right for reading the Wall Street Journal!

we are in all cash at this point- thinking about getting in to really beaten down stocks with no/ low debt are minting $$, IF the market tanks even more.
That’s what I did with Apple in march of 2009, when the world was ending…

Wish I would have done that, both back then, and now. We are highly invested in aggressive stock mutual funds. However, we just keep adding and staying put. Don’t want to cash in anything, it’s for the very long term. And our timing sucks, so it’s better to just not look!

We are planning on buying some real estate with IRA $$ for rental purposes in SCalif next week[ if we are the high bidders, that is- Chinese are desperate to buy anything in Calif. ]
DH has just taken a plane there to check out the property we are interested in . It happens to be next door to where DS in living,- a nice perk.
That will provide a nice income stream.

That sounds like a good idea. I keep wondering if it would be better to wait, if real estate prices crash. But then maybe it’s the only thing people will want to invest in!

I dont think real estate $$ will crash again, [certainly not like the last time when it was propped up by air] , and this happens to be in a small nice city with 2 colleges and not enough [relatively]low cost housing for all the grad students, young professional, etc, etc. Lots of newer high priced rentals are going begging, but the lower prices ones in good locations are snapped up quickly ]
4-5% ROI looks good to me .

Smart move, menloparkmom. B-)

Seemslike a smart plan. Can’t go wrong with a positive cash flow.
