Interesting perspective: [Burned by the Best of Breed: Barry Ritholtz on JP Morgan | Breakout - Yahoo! Finance](Burned by the Best of Breed: Barry Ritholtz on JP Morgan)

HP is on deck. I think that HP will definitely have problems in PCs and Printers - there’s a trend towards less printing caused by mobile devices and tablets. I also expect that they will have problems with their enterprise computing division given the Itanium fiasco. It should be interesting to see if they have made a decision on dropping headcount by 25K-30K.

My feeling is that Intel and Microsoft should be fine. Dell and HP are not doing well because they make a lot of cheap junk and try to sell a lot of volume. Lenovo and Apple are doing quite well with PCs - they sell better quality stuff and charge for it. I think that a lot of people are buying White Box PCs - basically noname or locally-built computers. I haven’t heard of any slowdowns on license sales at Microsoft. I think that the brutal cost-cutting is hurting Dell and HP as their reputations have taken a hit for many years - those that want the lowest price may go with them but those in the know consider them last.

I saw Dan Niles on CNBC yesterday…and I am mentioning this because…my thinking is similar.

With Windows 8…and the move to make Windows Pcs more like Apples…people are going to hold off buying pcs until Windows 8 is released.

I can see this hurting Msft and Intc temporarily.

Longer term…I do think the move to Windows 8 will be good for Msft.

As expected, Microsoft will offer those who buy a new PC in the coming months the ability to get a heavily discounted upgrade to Windows 8.

The news was reported by CNET earlier this month, with additional details, including the cost, trickling out in recent days. Our sources confirm that Microsoft will offer $15 Windows Pro 8 upgrades to those buying a new PC with Windows 7 Home Basic or higher.

Intel keeps making better and better chips. Their current, new Tri-Gate chips reduce power consumption. Next year, they are bringing out Haswell with a bunch of architectural improvements for improved performance. I’m pretty eager myself to get a Haswell chip - there’s one particular instruction that they are extending to 256 bit vectors that should speed up string processing by quite a bit that should be really interesting.

I think some people are still going to wait to purchase pcs.

“But PC makers will clearly be gearing up for Windows 8 so that they can start pitching the new operating system as soon as it is ready.
This fall, some hardware makers will introduce convertible PCs that function as both tablets and laptops, as noted here, or will add things like touch sensors to existing displays, in order to bridge the two operating systems.
One company that has already announced a Windows 8 laptop is Lenovo. At the Consumer Electronics Show in January of this year, the China-based PC maker showed off the IdeaPad Yoga, a laptop with a 10-finger touchscreen and a full range of motion at the hinge so when fully folded it turns into a 13.3.-inch tablet.
Overall, one can expect a lot of Windows 8-ready machines to be part of the back-to-school lineups. But expect most PC makers to hold off on design overhauls for the Windows 8 launch.”

That’s ok…

I am long msft…and I will add to my position over time…

But…I hope Europe doesn’t screw things up too much…

Maybe …I should want Europe to screw things up…hmmmmm

Could be getting closer to the time to pull the trigger and buy

We should see a lot more in the way of convertible laptop/tablets when Haswell comes out - the power savings will enable long battery life for such devices. I personally will probably just stick with Apple’s stuff as I like Unix for my PCs.

any views on tbt as a longer term holding?

Thanks BCEagle91,

I hope Tilson did not sell…

After all…the stock is worth 30…

Bks is trading at 16.45 today…

I have been waiting for an E-Book to come out for a few months and just found out that it’s coming out for Nook. I had the Kindle App loaded on my iPod Touch and liked that format. I use iBooks for reading text that I already have. I had to download the Nook App for the book to come (it comes out in a month). Having three bookreader Apps is a pain.

It appears that Barnes and Noble paid off MGM to get placement on their E-Book reader. No idea if that’s a viable long-term strategy.

Short oil…
I guess that is hedging your silver position…

I never traded tbt…

Call me crazy, but i thinking, only thinking, going long the euro

I have no idea how viable Bks is going to be as a company.

I do like the stores. I hope BKS survives.

Can’t wait to hear Dennis Gartman coming up on cnbc, lol

Echhhhh…

Thanks for the heads up. :)

Dennis Gartman, The Commodities King, says the market is irrational…duhh…He is short the euro,so maybe i will get long the euro…he is .still bullish gold, but admits we are in a deflationary period…hack…
