The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

I’m thinking of shorting oil. This would be completely antithetical to my investments for the last 12 years - hard to do psychologically.

ISM failing is not surprising - the drug addict needs another hit and hasn’t had one in a long time.

Psychologically, I find it harder to go short than go long.

I know people that are the opposite…or I used to anyway…

Most people who predominantly short have very poor long term track records.

and LNCR ran away from me too fast…I was too slow and hesitant to pull the trigger last Friday…serves me right for being sidetracked by other mundane tasks like CC…lol

Near-sourcing…

Krlilies, i don’t usually chase “hot stocks” or rumors, but LNCR was brought to my attention on Wednesday after it had jumped up from 25 ish to 29 ish. When I found out it was actually a real company with real earnings (not a pump and dump penny stock) I bought 200 shares… sold this morning +10.

Very nice, NJres.

NJRes,

I thought I saw a tall shadow last Wed for LNCR so I hesitated Friday. Good call on your part.

I trade oil futures all the time - both long and short. Oil can also be shorted by buying DTO, an inverse ETF.

Spoke to a former selectman on the mall. He said that it is busy there with the parking lot full and that the overflow lot is getting used. He also told me that there are a lot of foreigners there given the number of people that are speaking in other-than-english languages. I assume that most of these folks are from Europe.

I asked about prices and he said that they were a little bit better than retail - probably means that I don’t have a good reason for shopping there other than to see what the latest stuff looks like.

Outlet mall with prices only a little better?

Hmmmm…

Oil prices are up quite a bit today…

This is the end of the gasoline price drop for now…

The economic numbers aren’t great…

A house in Novato…which is in North Marin…went on the market for 400,000…that is probably a little below the average priced home in Novato… And there were 22 bids…

There are true factory outlets (as in they are located next to the factory) and then what are called factory outlets which seem to have a bunch of stores clumped together. They might sell seconds or returns or something; my general experience is that they are more or less like regular stores - just a little more casual.

I like to shop at true factory outlets - prices are typically great but you have to take what they put out - you may not find what you’re looking for or the size that you want on the day that you are there.

We have factory outlet store malls that are made up of many stores. They are about 40 min and an hour away. I find the inventory is limited at these stores. The outlet mall that is an hour away is a destination for shoppers.

I know many people enjoy shopping at these malls. I am not sure how good the deals are. My limited experience with these stores is the deals are ok…nothing to drive an hour for…

I think calling a store a factory outlet store probably attracts bargain seekers.

I was part owner of a shoe store and I recently sold my investment for $1. Management is incompetent. It was a wholesale fashion shoe store. Some of these stores do very well…
Not mine. We were selling shoes for $10 or $11. Some of those shoes were overruns…and were pretty nice.

Oh well…

I could have done without the loss. ;)

The problem is that so many things are made in China, Mexico, Vietnam, Thailand, Morocco, etc. I like shopping at the New Balance Factory Outlet because they actually make the shoes in there (well some of them - they still make shoes overseas too but there’s an indication on the box as to where they were made).

I like New Balance shoes too.

I am unaware of any new Balance Factory Outlet around here.

I have been buying my tennis shoes at Costco. I don’t think the shoes are as good as New Balance shoes…but the cost is right.

I pay $20-$35 for running and tennis shoes, cross-trainers and trail runners at the Boston New Balance Factory Outlet.

Those are great prices. I would shop there if I lived near there.

My husband likes New Balance too because they offer wide sized shoes. BCEagle91, does that factory outlet store carry NB minimus shoes at the same px? I have two of these and I love their look but not recommended for high-impact exercises.

As for the market, lots of green bars on my screen today just as Venus is roaring on her way to a 6th Wimbledon maybe? But I think it maybe Kerber vs. Azarenka while my husband thinks it’s either Radwanska or Lisicki vs Azarenka. So I’m closely watching Kerber vs. Lisicki to see who wins the bet.

New Balance offers very wide shoes with some high-arch options. I take 4E as does my son and we have high arches. The factory outlet often carries discontinued models in the deep discount section. The newer models aren’t discounted as heavily. I’m not familiar with the NB Minimus line.

Venus lost in the first round. Perhaps you meant Serena. I am disappointed that Sharapova lost - I was expecting it to be between her and Serena. Serena seems a bit streaky this tournament or maybe the other girls have her game figured out.

I just looked at my previous comment and wow you’re right, I did say Venus. Quite odd of me since I just watched Serena beat Petra a couple of hrs. ago or so. Must be some sort of slip-of-the-tongue phenomena where I subconsciously preferred Venus over Serena.

I wanted Sharapova to do better too.

Since this is an investment thread…

Today…I bought some GS subordinated debt with maturites of 15 and 25 years. The yields are 5.8 and 6.8 percent. GS debt is not even single A rated anymore. There is risk of inflation…and GS blowing up…I doubt the latter…and I just have too much cash…and that is a risk too.

I bought the debt in my SEP IRA so the interest is tax deferred. Because of withdrawal rules, and my age…I think 25 years in the IRA is as long as I can invest.

I was looking at Jeffries debt…but I did not pull the trigger…maybe I will buy a small amount…because the last I looked Ian Cummings owned a lot of Jeffries and he is not a fool. And that is the only reason I would buy Jeffries’ debt…that and the yield.
I don’t know what Jeffries does anymore.

I am hearing that some of the smaller brokerage firms are selling out for almost nothing.
