My husband and I have been laughing at the polo pony all over Team USA. To us polo is a spring/summer/fall sport and the equstrian sports aren’t part of the winter olympics. Looks like the whole iconic upscale image has gone mass market. The whole thing just seems like a marketing “miss” with snow/ice/etc. There was one announcer wearing a puffy down jacket and the horse looked like it was 6 inches tall on the chest. Wierd. There’s just something too funny about Bode Miller with a horse on his forehead. Anyone else finding this terribly ironic or do we just have an off sense of humor?

I was looking at Olympics-themed clothes ant Macy’s and was surprised to see that RL’s classy-looking pony logo has mutated into a gigantic blob!

Mutated is a good word. As a marketing person eek not sure this was a good long-term decision. I laughed when my senior son went out the door this morning he had unearthed his alligators and said the pony was “not gonna be seen” for awhile LOL. Ooh la la.

It’s appalling! I have no interest in being an ad for RL, who ,several times, has attempted to sue the US Polo Association trademark infringement. Apparently, they foolishly thought that they could use the image of a polo rider.

When our girls were competing in HS sports, there were very strict rules limiting the number and size of any commercial logos on HS uniforms. When our family hosted a couple of foreign collegiate athletes, I recall looking for a Sharpie so one of the girls could black out a logo on her swim cap that was had two logos (I guess the USA swimming regulatiuons called for no more than one logo of a certain size?). The mutant ponies will definitely be against any such rules!

I did not like our team’s outfits. The hats were nice, but the “pants on the ground” look with gigantic blobby ponies was depressing. That was exactly the stuff I saw at Macy’s! Even if it goes on sale, I’m not touching it! The Canadian team looked really cool in their red parkas, colored scarves and pom-pom hats (were they made by Roots?), the Russians had their stylish red jackets with paisley designs, and the best dressed were the French and the Italian teams, what a surprise! H walked in the room from his biobreak, glanced at the TV screen and asked, “Is this Italy? They look so Armani!” LOL.

All I noticed of the American outfits was the woolly hats which I thought were nice. I will have to go and check out this polo pony.

There was some country with really wild looking pants.

Swimcatsmom, I noticed some crazy-looking pants, too! I will not post my H’s comments about those pants
That was probably the team from Azerbaijan. There was another team with crazy-looking pants, but they were not as wild as the Azerbaijani pants!

Here is the USA team look, except the pants were waaay too baggy for many athletes!

And this is what we should expect to see at the closing ceremony:

USA team look = nasty. I love the hats. The pony emblem on the jackets is hideously large! What overkill! I thought the jackets looked short and didn’t care for the white pants on any of them either.

Swimcatsmom, are these the pants?

Yes those are the ones.

swimcatsmom, I forgot to mention that Great Britain had very nice, very classy outfits! :)

Maybe that will compensate for my lack of enthusiasm if they win another medal for curling.

I looked through all of the pics ^ linked above I really liked the ones from Monaco and I also liked the the ones from Australia.

i don’t care at all for the xl king-sized polo pony on the US uniforms. just a bit too commercial for me.

i do like the pants that the Azerbaijan team wore. very colorful and fun.

I think this former Soviet Republic has never won a winter olympic medal of any kind. The Azerbaijani pants did make their team stand out of the crowd of many small countries with no real chance of ever medaling at these games! Now we all talk about Azerbaijan :)

Haven’t you all seen those large polo ponies on shirts before? RL first brought them out a few years ago. They’re nothing new.

I missed the opening ceremonies and first saw the sweater on Stephen Colbert, and laughed because I thought it was such a send-up of traditional American iconography (red white and blue, grandpa cardigan by the fire, and my logo is bigger than yours). And then realized it wasn’t a joke - it was the team sweater! I kind of like it, though, in a weird way.

Pizzagirl, I’ve been buying RL polo shirts for DH for years, but somehow I missed the deployment of the gigantic ponies! I usually go past the “preppy” stuff and check if the classic solid color shirts are on sale.
