@busdriver11 The most common time a woman is killed by her abusive partner is when she has finally spoken up and tried to get protection.
Corey Feldman has said there was a recent attempt on his life. He says he needs personal security protection and legal representation. He is trying to figure out how to afford that, not how to profit: The case is hugely expensive–he’s risking not just his privacy, autonomy, finances, and future work, but his life.
Corey Feldman isn’t “monetizing” (as you say) his public testimony of personal experience and witness to child rape in the entertainment business. Instead–as for many reporting victims–child sexual abuse cost him innocence, his reputation, and legal defense expenses (defamation, you name it–lawsuits at a plaintiff!).
Sexual abusers defend themselves very aggressively. The court (and media) can provide opportunity for a secondary stage of symbolic rape by a wealthy, well-connected defendant.
Abusers often rely on controlling perceptions of themselves; are adept at hiding their behavior for years; and count on the denial and disbelief of bystanders: They desperately don’t want their “audience” of supporters and sycophants to believe the allegations.
Such crimes usually happen in secret, where the only witness is the victim (and on occasion in Corey’s statements, another child witness.) Thus the abuser and their legal representatives’ tactic is full scale character assassination of any witness or complainant, the more vicious the better: A complete legal turnaround–an offensive defense. Whatever they think will turn witnesses’ testimony to jelly, sky’s the limit. That’s why many witness fold and retract.
Testifying against such entitled criminals–who are used to crossing boundaries, covering up, lying, cruelty, and manipulation–can be hugely expensive. A victim or witness for victim may find him/her/themselves in the position of needing to defend against all kinds of retaliation–not only reputation loss, but also threats, intimidation, lawsuits, and (ironically) social opprobrium. Against the victim!
Criminals who inflict themselves on minors and others sexually are very dangerous. They will do anything to hide their crimes.
Contrary to popular belief, there’s no profit in reporting child sexual abuse or rape. In fact, only 3% of men accused of child sexual abuse are ever imprisoned.
Reporting is hugely expensive and may cost the ultimate sacrifice–for only the rarest outcome of justice.
