<p>The good news is that it’s scheduled to open for 2016-17 academic year. The bad news is you’ll have to deal with construction noise for two years.</p>

<p>Lville is nearing the end of a twenty year cycle of major renovations and new construction. Next up, steam pipe (heating) system, then the Lavino Field House, then they are done. </p>

…an outdoor patio, a sidewalk café that will overlook the Crescent from the Bath House. This addition to the “Bath House Café” will be lighted for evening use and outfitted with tables and chairs for students to gather, decompress after a long day, and share food and conversation.

In honor of 25 years of coeducation, last year we decided to re-landscape the Crescent and to convert the Bath House to a student café, to serve as an informal, indoor gathering space for students of all Forms and both genders.</p>

<p>Ever since the School became coed, there has been a desire for such an indoor, all-School, social space to complement the Bowl and the Circle. We hope that the renovated Bath House café will both knit the campus community together and strengthen the House system by more fully integrating the Crescent and the Circle with each other and with the Second and Fifth Forms. We plan to undertake the renovations this coming summer and look forward to dedicating the restored Bath House and re-landscaped Crescent next year.

<p>I actually liked reading the convocation speech, which was sprinkled with some interesting tidbits of history that I hadn’t known before. My favorite passage was this:</p>

One of the most notable features of the Crescent is the charming building in its middle. The Bath House was originally built in the mid-1880s to provide a common bathing space for the Circle houses – it had 12 bathtubs and a reading room, where each boy was “detained for about a quarter of an hour after bathing in order to prevent him from taking cold.”[8] Until that time, the students used the campus pond or buckets of water to bathe. When the Bath House opened it was considered a major step forward in hygiene and cleanliness, though there was no hot water and each boy was allocated just two, 20-minute baths a week – if you missed one of your scheduled baths, you had to wait until your next turn a few days later.[9] Just imagine only being able to take one or two, cold baths a week.

<p>Scroll up and there’s an explanation. But it’s basically a small, squat building in the center of campus that used to house baths (when they didn’t have in-dorm bathrooms). Now, it’s a storage center, I think, but they’re turning it into a student cafe.</p>
