The Macaulay thread

Hmm, guess you have a point there. I ended up getting an acceptance into Macaulay at Brooklyn College the next day in the post mail, so that was really weird.

Anyhoo, did you apply to the Brooklyn campus? I’m most likely not going at this point so you could probably get off that waiting list. Please don’t lose hope my friend!

Accepted to MHC at Hunter. Decent SATs, great essays, and good interview. Hopefully seeing some of you guys soon!

I can’t believe I’m just seeing this thread, it’s really helpful.

Anyway I applied to Macaulay for fall 2013 and I have my interview on Wednesday xD I hope it’s a good sign that I’ll be accepted.

Anyone else out there applied to Macaulay this year?

I applied. I listed hunter as my first choice and had an interview last Saturday. I listed Lehman as my third Choice and was offered an interview by the admissions director so I hope that I will get in to Macaulay :)

Hunter is my first choice as well. I’m kinda nervous about the interview to be honest. You’d think after doing so many that another one would be a walk in the park, but I think I’m more nervous because of what’s at stake.

Anyway, good luck Jazmine  I hope we both get into Hunter xD. Quick question, was the interview a panel interview or an individual?

Uh oh. My son applied but has not been contacted about an interview. Is it customary for Macaulay to contact everyone they’re interested in for an interview? I thought he’d have a good shot at getting accepted. We’re from upstate NY, and I haven’t been able to figure out if that works in his favor or if it’s to his detriment (or if it doesn’t matter at all).

^ Never mind. He did get an invitation but somehow missed it. He got a reminder today, and we’re going down on Monday. He hasn’t had any one-on-one interviews; I hope he doesn’t get too nervous!

Was the interview notification via snail mail or email? Can you please let us know? Did anybody hear from Macaulay Queens, Brooklyn BA-MD or Sophie David?

Sbmhhs, my son got the interview notification via e-mail. His was from Hunter, which was his first choice. Queens and Brooklyn are his second and third choices, and he hasn’t heard anything from them.

Usually if a college is interested in an applicant they will contact them for an interview. That doesn’t mean that just because you didn’t get an interview, you won’t be accepted. But, when I attended my interview the lady said “well the good news is is that you were asked to have an interview, which means you made the first cut.” Idk everything about their admissions process but I doubt that no one that wasn’t contacted for an interview won’t get accepted. And ivy vision, the interview I had was with two women- a student and a professor. They gathered all of the interviewees for that time slot into a room and called us in in groups in alphabetical order. There were approximately 10 stations set up and they gave each of us a number and we went to our assigned station where out interviewer(one to two people) waited for us

My D did a Skype interview for Macaulay @ Hunter this week. She’s too far away to fly in for an hour interview. Without guaranteed 4 yr housing and with only in-state tuition paid, I doubt that it is a viable option for her. What do you plan to do about housing for the last two years?!

Oh wow thanks for such a detailed description jazmine, it really answered up some questions I had.

@fosterte, I’m in the same situation as your son. I haven’t received any communication from my second and third choice campuses. Let’s just hope this is good news though.

I don’t know if I’m going to Macaulay if I’m accepted, but I would either commute for two years and stay in the dorms for the other two years, or live in EHS housing for the last two years. Or, with the money I save, I could get an apartment(but this is not very viable since the city is ridiculously expensive.) the thing that would cost the most money is food since students don’t have a meal plan.

Macaulay would be in my top 5 schools if I’m accepted, but then again that’s not saying much because I only applied to 6 schools lol.

And yea the food situation would be the only drawback, because, as you may know, dining in Manhattan is quite expensive. The Brookdale dorm does however have a kitchen, so if you are somewhat inclined you could make your own food. But hmmm, that would be an interesting experience as I think it would force the students to be more responsible.

It’s officially one month left. Coming off the interview, I’m feeling pretty good about my chances and I hope you guys are feeling the same :)

Hi guys I’m actually a freshman at Macaulay at Hunter and I live at Brookdale so if you have any questions feel free to post them here and I’ll totally help you out (or try)!!!

Oh cool, thanks for doing this Dramamine.

Ok one of the reservations I have about the Macaulay program is the fact that it is just a program not a school. I’d be getting my degree from Hunter so would you say it’s worth it to choose Macaulay over a top school

Out of the amount of people they interview, how many do they accept?

ivyvision: no problem!! Actually, when you graduate from Macaulay at any CUNY campus, you get BOTH a Macaulay and a hunter degree – so you get two separate ones. Regarding your question though, there are too many factors to answer it definitely. For example, if you were to get into an ivy with really good and doable financial aid, I’d say go there. But if you’re going to be potentially paying a lot and you dont want to or can’t burden your family with the expenses of college, Macaulay is an amazing choice. I know lots of people here who turned down Ivys and really great schools for Macaulay.

anthon, that’s a little hard for me to answer because I’m not a part of the admissions committee, but based on the amount of people I know who got interviews id say there’s about an 80-85% chance you’re going to get admitted (I do in fact know of a few people who were interviewed but ultimately rejected – but it’s only a few). Also if you didn’t receive an interview it doesn’t definitely mean you won’t be admitted, as I know a few people who currently attend and were never interviewed. However, your chances of admission probably are higher if they asked for one.
