The Macaulay thread

Sooo excited! I applied to Macaulay @ Queens. It was for selfish reasons of course, because I didn’t think I’d get into Hunter with all the competition for the dorms, & everything else is too far away for me to travel. In short, I’m just lazy and don’t want to commute > 30 minutes to get to college unless I’m dorming

Wow…just seeing this thread made me pull out my rejection letter from ED Macaulay Honors Brooklyn for 2014.

I applied Early Decision for Macaulay Honors-Brooklyn College. I was always attracted to Brooklyn College, and applied even though the average SAT score was among the highest (1400).

My SATs was a mere 1190 R/M combined. But I’m the saludatorian of my class, with a 96 GPA. I interned here and there and I’m the president of the Red Cross Club at my school. I got fairly strong recommendation letters but my essays received mixed reviews from readers.

Of course, I got rejected from the ED pool, but according to another thread on College Confidential it seems like I have a chance at regular decision. My friend’s brother was also the saludatorian of his class with an 1800 on his SATs (same as mine) and got into MH Hunter without applying Early Decision.

I wasn’t really sure about my chances at Macaulay Honors Brooklyn, and I thought that the rejection letter in December basically meant the end of the road for me. But when the regular CUNY admissions began rolling out, I was really surprised to see that the website said that my application was pending review from Macaulay Honors.

What do you guys think? I feel like I felt 3 months ago, sitting on the edge of my seat and waiting on the page to load.

Well, contrary to what most people think to be true, ED apps do offer stiffer competition at times. The reasons are two-fold. The first is that the slots are limited (extremely so), and if everyone thinks like most others (ie - “I should apply ED because my chances are better”), then the chances actually become worst as there is a clamoring for the limited spots. The second reason is that the admissions office will only take the creme of the crop during ED, and this is logical. ED applicants show the most interest and will most likely attend if accepted. Therefore, the admissions office needs not to “over-tally” acceptance (which allows for below avg SAT scores to get in) in doubts of some students not choosing to attend.
Hopefully, all goes well. Best of luck!

Eight Days until letters are mailed out!

Yep!!! Can’t wait! Even though I probably won’t get in! My ACT (27) and SAT(1100 ish) are both very low for the average mhc class! However, I have a great GPA, great leadership roles, ec’s, and great recommendations. I’m accepted to HUNTER, but I reallllllllly want a dorm! I’ll be okay without honors, as long as I could just get a dorm!

Damon,

In response to your post, sorry for some “bad” news. I was with sonny for the Macaulay Open House in Fall 2009. We were told that the minimum SAT would be 600 on the subtests of the SAT to be considered for the M. Honors program. Maybe your ACT score would suffice since it may equate to a 600 or better on the SAT? (Not sure about the converted equivalency but there are charts out there for this purpose.) GL to you. Cannot blame you for wanting to live in the Hunter College area of NYC.

MHC decisions in 4 days! I’m totally tempted to just call them…

Whatever. If I don’t make it, I totally don’t mind going to Hunter regular.

I’m trying not to count down to March 15, but I can’t help it! I just really want to know whether I got in or not NOW.

Can’t really do anything about it now, so I’ll just act normal and pretend that I’m not waiting for anything. lol

Good luck to everyone though!

Yeah these last few days are going to drag on.

Three days.

I am glad to see all this excitement! I am currently a student in Macaulay at Hunter College. If any of you guys get in, be sure to come to the March 23rd event; I will be speaking there to welcome all the newly accepted students.

Two. Practically everyone at my school applied to Hunter Mac, so I’m nervous.

Got accepted to Macaulay Baruch today over the phone. Pretty excited =]

BTW anyone know the restrictions on the $7,500 spending?

Congrats significa!

Actually, earlier I was talking to a student teacher at my school, and she told me you could spend that stipend on anything.

Congrats! That is so awesome!

Anyone know if Hunter makes any calls about acceptances?

Well you can’t exactly spend it on “anything.”

It does have to be approved and you have to write a coherent educational reason as to “why” you want to use it the way you want to.

Did everyone who got a call about housing from baruch yesterday get into macaulay?

to goin2college, while I got into Macaulay and got a call about housing, there were others who were just informed of getting into Baruch Honors.

i know this is extremely late considering admissions decissions come out like in 2 days but just out of curiosity, if you sent in your activity sheet late to Macaulay Hunter, would they even bother to look at it?

^ highly doubt it since they already made decisions, but I say, leave no stone unturned. If you can fax it, fax it. Mail=too long.
