Robert Vaughn died today after a battle with leukemia. I grew up loving both Napoleon Solo and Ilya Kuryakin. When I was 14, I got Robert Vaughn’s autograph outside the 21 Club in New York - a great thrill.
Oh no! I loved that show. RIP.
David McCallum plays Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard on NCIS. In an episode early in NCIS’s run, someone asked Gibbs (Mark Harmon) what Ducky looked like when he was young. He replied “like Ilya Kuryakin”. Other guy stared quizzically.
My 11th birthday was a Man From U.N.C.L.E. party; black turtlenecks and badges. I was definitely a Napoleon girl, and still will sit and watch The Magnificent Seven whenever I catch it on TV.
Close Channel D.
I remember making my own U.N.C.L.E. upside down triangle badge (no. 7?). Was very upset at my older brother who was a “Thrush” agent!
Didn’t everyone have a crush on Ilya? In those sweaters?
Loved how they got into the office through the tailor shop, twisting the wall hook in the dressing room.
Today, radio mentioned Vaughn had said, long ago, that the show was a joke (ish) on the then Bond mania.
Used to see Robert Vaughn driving around the Danbury area in his Rolls Royce.
My neighborhood hoard routinely reinacted man from uncle episodes in the adjacent open fields and abandoned outbuildings…till our folks called us in at dusk…
It was a different time.
RIP.
Robert Vaughn was one of my customers at the pet shop I owned. Along with someone looking for a pretty woman, a late night talk show host we weren’t supposed to recognize, and one of the actors from The Devil Wears Prada. Oh yes, a NYC tv weatherman who owned a corgi – one of my favorite customers. And then there was Snuffluffagus …
I loved the Man from UNCLE and both Robert Vaughn and David McCallum. I just happened to catch The Magnificent Seven on TV a few weeks ago. Don’t usually watch NCIS but have seen it once or twice and happy to see DM or Ilya Kuryakin on it.
I loved the Man From UNCLE. When he moved to Connecticut (a place that was, at that time, flyover country) I couldn’t understand it. And then when Paul Newman moved…well, that was the ultimate insult.
Many many years later I went through Connecticut. Got it then.
A friend and I used to have arguments because I preferred “Man from Uncle” and she preferred “Secret Agent”. But she was British. “There’s a man who leads a life of danger…”.
I loved Man from UNCLE as a kid! There is an episode in which Sonny and Cher guest starred! It was sad to see Vaughn as the spokesperson for a personal injury law firm in recent years.
I always wanted to see him on NCIS but, sadly, it will never happen now. I was an am an Ilya Kuriyakin girl. Even my H was blonde in his day.
H and I happened on a Man from UNCLE episode on tv recently from the first season. The two guest actors were William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy! I checked the movie database, a,d the episode was filmed about two years before Star Trek. Hoolywood’s always a smaller place than we think.
@hayden They had come through a time warp to save humanity. LOL
We used to play Man From U.N.C.L.E. when I was a kid. Everybody wanted to be Napoleon Solo. No disrespect to the late Mr. Vaughn, a great talent and anti-Vietnam War activist, but I was always Illya. :)>-
