A local boy credits a science fiction book for his survival when he recently fell into a fast moving river.
Does scholastic think girls don’t go hiking? Or go outdoors?

Really - someone wrote these books in 2012? Sheesh. Reminds me of the bad old days when I was in middle school. Boys could not take home ec, and girls could not take shop. Some brave parents challenged it every year, and every year, they lost.

Bethany in HI was on her way to a surfing career when she had an arm bitten off in a surfing attack. She went on to have a movie made and also continues to surf competitively, I believe.

I remember that attack HImom.
My youngest, who is the same age went on a marine biology school trip to Lahaina a few months after the attack on Bethany.
She loved surfing and snorkeling, but she also told me she thought she saw a shark but didn’t tell anyone cause she wasn’t sure.

Probably she will never be faced with polar bear, but considering her life so far, she could be very well faced with an earthquake, flash flood, plane crash or shark attack.

I’ve survived an earthquake, flash flood, and very small second degree frostbite. I’ve also survived the forest and the rain forest lol. My best friend goes to school way up in the UP and I always joke that he lives with the polar bears. I should send him the polar bear one for his birthday lol.

Add how to survive a breakout to both lists. I still laugh recalling the day his senior year when S called from the student parking lot before school started for the day. He had picked a blemish on his forehead before getting out of the car and it was gushing blood. He refused to enter the building, and the security guards wouldn’t let him out of the lot without a pass. How to Survive a Breakout would have been more helpful to both of us than How to Survive a Shark Attack. Although at that moment, he would have preferred to have been attacked by a shark. Would have been a cooler explanation of the bloody forehead than “I picked a zit”.

My kids & I have all had some earthquake experience & also faced a flood when they were an infant & toddler. Where where the articles when I needed them to know what to do?!?!?

Hope not to need the other topics, oh, except how to handle becoming rich. Maybe if we all read it & practice, we’ll be rich before we know it! (I’m assuming the author is theorizing because if s/he was wealthy, why waste the time & effort writing about the problems associated with wealth?
