The most elitist people when they finally reach the ranks of the elite:

Schmaltz, You seem to be mixing me up with someone else. I made the comment about the Timex but nothing about your being a Communist or alluding to anything about having fancy cars or clothes . I’m pretty cheap in terms of spending money on cars or clothes. Have no clue what you are referring to when you are responding to me about my “opulence.” Isn’t me so I suggest you check things more carefully next time before you go off on someone.

Sevmom, you said this: "someone buying a Mercedes really doesn’t owe any of us an explanation either. I have no need for a fancy car but it is really none of my business if someone else thinks they do. "

I’d like to know where I even remotely suggested people don’t have a right to spend their money any way they want or owe anybody an explanation for their purchases.

Sevmom, sorry for the confusion. I should have made it clearer that my second paragraph in post #175 was responding to the screeching voices in general opposing me, not yours in particular.

Schmaltz, It is not so much that you are saying that people don’t have a right to buy what they want,it’s just that you seem to really judge people that fall out of line(flaunting) with what you feel is reasonable. Sorry if I’m mistaken about your position. Thank you for the apology. Go Steelers!

A story in today’s LA Times highlighting the directors of some of the year’s outstanding movies was accompanied by a picture. The director of "The Social Network is wearing a college sweatshirt   ;)

[Directors: Directors on directing - latimes.com](Directing is the easy part)

Saw an adorable little boy at the park yesterday wearing a Harvard jersey. I restrained myself from telling his parents that he was doomed to grow up to be ugly.

If anything, this thread has made you pay more attention to anybody wearing an HYP shirt, so that’s good. Pay closer attention this time and you will see my point.

It’s true that if you’re beautiful, you get a free pass UNLESS you are beautiful but dumb-looking/have a dumb disposition.

Wow, that’s just what my drive-in therapist/palm reader told me! I’m actually beautiful, it’s just that I am dumb-looking/have a dumb disposition.

nychomie, what I just don’t understand is why a good-looking recent Princeton grad is bothering to hang around the parents forum. There’s a whole big world out there full of gorgeous people who aren’t wearing college sweatshirts. Yet you choose to spend your time with us, the ugly and unglamorous. That’s really very sweet and generous of you to be so concerned about our welfare.

Too hot today to wear sweatshirts, college or otherwise.

I’m watching football and am bored. But otherwise, I spend a lot of time writing articles, so I use CC as a diversion. Hot people can be scholarly too (spend hours at a time reading/writing).

Nobody has mentioned the folks sporting a “Yale Alumni” sweatshirt or a “Harvard Dad” t-shirt, and just how ridiculously desperate they are to make sure everybody knows they have an actual connection with the college, in order to distinguish themselves from the slobs who just happened to be in New Haven for a funeral or in Boston for an Elks Lodge convention.

Also, you have to factor things like going out of style, outgrowing them, and theft into the it’s-best-in-the-long-run-to-get-the-top-quality thing equation. Pity the poor guy who bought a Burberry Nehru jacket with a 40-year guarantee back in the '60’s.

And we all know THIS guy:

Bill: Hey, where’s that great Swiss watch your wife bought you?
Elmer: You mean the $3000 watch that was shock-proof, water-proof, dust-proof, and had a 100-year guarantee to work in outer space and 2 miles under the surface of the ocean?
Bill: Yeah, that one.
Elmer: I lost it.

Complete and total BS. At least own up to your judgmental attitude and obvious disdain and repulsion for the non “attractive.” Some people are elitist for thinking they are better than others based on what college they went to. Others are elitist, shallow, and dismissive towards others based on their perceived physical attractiveness. You know, they believe that being attractive makes them less likely to be superficial, arrogant, and superior. They make judgments of a person’s values, self-esteem, pride in actual accomplishments, and appreciation for the strength of their friendships and relationships- solely on the basis of looks. Ugly people couldn’t possibly derive their self esteem from those things, they have to latch on to where they went to college or their wealth in order to find any meaning to their pathetic lives.

Your posts are not simple observations. They are the epitome of judgmental.

It’s not enough for Schmaltz to live frugally and save his money. He also wants to feel smug and superior to those who make other choices. A little bit like a “dry drunk,” don’t you think?

yes,Gourmetmom, interesting how superior he seems to feel (unless he is like Amy Chua and will tell us it’s a joke and we just don’t get his deadpan humor)and we all know THAT guy!

I have a feeling in his dreams he’s driving a big Mercedes sedan, whilst wearing a solid gold Rolex…

Reverse snobbery is just as unattractive as snobbery.

Could have gotten a perfectly serviceable education at any community college in this land, Schmaltz. Why did you go to Boston College? Rather uppity of you, eh? Putting on airs?

Certainly hope you’ve never taken a vacation or stayed in a hotel beyond a Motel 6. After all, you don’t need vacations and a bed and a shower are a bed and a shower.

Spare me the sanctimony and the faux-Andy-Rooney-kids-get-offa-my-lawn schtick.

Pizzagirl, methinks your ire stems from being ashamed to face the ridiculousness of your thought processes, such as…

…“Ok, I’m buying a car…so that’s $20,000 for good reliable transportation…AND another $40,000 to make sure my butt doesn’t jiggle too much when I hit a bump.”

I think its great that ugly people wear HYP shirts and attractive people don’t. It reconfirms the stereotype that looks and brains don’t generally go together. Nychomie, now that I think of it, maybe you ought to wear your Princeton gear more often, otherwise others might mistake you for a typical dumb hottie.

I think we need to get back to the main point of this thread, which is clearly: How can I show off my affiliation with elite universities, without incurring the “ugliness penalty”?

This spring, I am planning to paint our house Navy blue, with a large white Y (must research proper type-face). I also plan to hire a local artist to add a portrait of “Handsome Dan.” But now, I am wondering. Do you think this might make our dog ugly? Because I do have dreams for our dog!

Also, does the fact that we live in an uber-rich suburb matter?

The HYP our OP is talking about are NOT Hermes, YSL and Prada?

(;))

Me? I don’t own a Mercedes. I own a Prius. I’m sure that’s showy in an different way as far as you’re concerned.

As I said, no Mercedes here (simply not my personal style), but I have no problem with anyone spending his / her money as he / she sees fit. I have plenty of luxuries in my life, we’re taking the fam to Europe first-class this summer, I’m sending two kids to top schools full-pay this fall and probably throwing an elaborate graduation party if the mood strikes, and I need not justify it to anyone or apologize for it, as H and I earned it honestly. What defensiveness are you referring to?
