The most money burning department?

So guys, what do you think is the most expensive department in a research university? By most expensive, I mean it costs the largest amount of money to operate, like big budget.

In my opinion, the top ones are:
ECE
Physics
Aerospace

bottom ones:
English
Foreign languages
Philosophy

medicine
physics
chemistry

Top:
ECE,physics and medicine.

bottom:
English

Anything physics/engineering related, and medicine.

If the department hires tons of prestigious professors, the cost will be much higher than you think.

Film departments? My college’s department has to buy film, lab prcessing, camera repairs, videotape, editing supplies, etc. They have a special employee for just ordering things.

Also, I would imagine drama would be expensive as well, especially since the shows are free.

i thought you meant money-burning for the students. which would be about the same as you listed. i just have to say, philosophy texts are so cheap! the originals are around $5, and you can get most of the essays on the school e-journal for free! only the packets they put together can get pretty pricey. but they are so difficult to read, no one would read them for fun. lol.

Chemistry, by far.

Electrical Engineering
talking about the cost of building and maintaining a clean room

Engineering, lab sciences.

architecture… :S

Biology at my school… that and chemistry

When you say money-burning you should factor in how much money a department brings into the school too. True, English costs less than Engineering, but English also brings in far, far less money.
