The Myth of Recession-Proof Jobs

Perhaps there’s hope for my son who is about to graduate with a BA in Economics after all. He’s learned how to reason out cause-and-effect, gained considerable math and analytical skills, and how to research and write effectively.

My degree is in biology and right after college I did my internship in medical technology. Part of the appeal of that career was that health care jobs were supposedly always plentiful, but I learned the truth very quickly. It was not easy to find a job in my field (this was in the early 80’s), I was forced to take some truly terrible jobs and was unemployed for awhile. As a result, I have never believed in “recession-proof” jobs.
I changed careers after 5 years and went into another field simply because I like it. It happens to be accounting, and I happen to have been successful (to date) with jobs, but I don’t believe that any job is recession proof.
