yes, I know every decade has some awful stuff. But what can you say about a decade that gave us “Torn between two Lovers”, “Muskrat Love,” “Afternoon Delight,” “Feelings,” “Seasons in the Sun” etc etc. I could go on all day. And you’ll ask why I bother–Well, I’ll tell you! it’s because the supermarket I shop at thinks that 70s pop is what I need to hear when I’m shopping–gifting me with endless varieties of excruciating earworms to carry home along with my groceries.

But what has tipped me over the edge is my latest experience there, where I got to hear two particularly awful songs, one that celebrated rape (no, not The Rapper–worse) and one that is a paean to pedophilia.

Last night I woke in the middle of the night with a migraine, and also with the latter song stuck in my head. I can take medication for the headache, but nothing works for the sick treacle of that song.

I’ll leave you all to decide what they were, or better yet not to, in order to be spared the pain!

I once got so irritated with store music that I actually went and complained. I figure they deserve to know what affect it has on potential customers. And it’s one of the very many reasons I prefer to do any December shopping via internet.

I have no idea which songs you’re referring to, but I agree that most of the music from the '70s was god awful. Although I disagree about “Seasons in the Sun” to an extent; I find the Nirvana cover to be quite infectious.

And when I think about it, I can’t decide which decade was worse: the '70s or the '80s. The thing about the 1980s is that all of its popular songs were one-hit wonders, while the artists themselves were largely ignored (seems pretty shallow to me). It was just one long string of one-hit wonders.

I actually like “Afternoon Delight.” In fact, I have it on my Ipod. My Ds heard it and liked it and they now have it on theirs. I think Matt Damon made it cool in their eyes on Good Will Hunting.

I do agree that much of the disco crap produced during my teen years was pretty horrible. I prefer the great music of the 60’s and early 70’s.

Not a fan of most disco, but actually most of the crap I’m referencing is not that; it’s just bad. (gotta say, Nrdsb4, I’ve never before met someone who liked AD, so good on you–personally, I feel like I gotta take a bath after hearing “Rubbin’ sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite/and the thought of rubbin’ you is getting so exciting”-eww.)

Um, there is that song about “go away, little girl, you’re much too hard to resist” . . . that one? Yes, that is gross. I can’t think of a rape song.

But I’m not going to let two nasty songs ruin the rest of that delicious '70s music for me. Going to listen to some Carpenters right now. :)

I get it’s sex–it’s the image of bodies rubbing like sticks that just doesn’t do it for me. Just doesn’t sound sexy to me. does anyone in real life talk about “the thought of rubbin’ you”? (don’t answer that.)

I take pleasure in listening to a wide variety of music genres (everything from classical to jazz to indie rock). I even enjoy all those old AM radio pop singles that I grew up listening to. It’s nostalgic. Sometimes I like a song for the melody, not the lyrics.

Have you ever considered bringing an iPod with you to the store and listening to it to avoid the music that bothers you so much?

1971 - Stairway to Heaven, American Pie, Roundabout by Yes, Every Picture Tells a Story by Rod Steward all released (freshman year at U of M).
1972 - Grateful Dead Live from Europe released.
1975 - Bruce Springsteen on the cover of both Time and Newsweek with release of the Born to Run album.
1978 - Roxanne by the Police released.

That’s just off the top of my head. There was a lot of good music in the 1970s.

yes–I know, this is not an anti-70s thread. This is an observation about the level of top 40 pop then. And my supermarket. And it wasn’t meant to be taken that seriously.

So, since no one asked, the rapey song is “I Gotcha” and the pedophile song is Gilbert O’Sullivan’s “Claire.” (Pleased, make it stop!)

Sorry, misinterpretation of your thread - but most Top 40 music is terrible. I was amazed the other day when I heard songs by Jimi Hendrix and the Grateful Dead in my local Kroger.

My local supermarket (about 70% Armenian) for some reason plays tons of golden oldies and Neil Diamond. I figure it’s nice enough to hum along to versus some of the Europop type stuff they used to play a few years ago.

Since I didn’t think I’d ever heard either “Claire” or “I Gotcha” I went and read the lyrics. Oy. Clair is horrific, how the heck did that even make it into the average Joe’s radio playlist? Yikes.

I think it is to a stores advantage to play great music, because I have strolled around even after I have gotten everything I came for just to hear the rest of a song.
( our grocery store plays great music, Cream, Savoy Brown, Marvin Gaye, Heart, Joni Mitchell, Gladys Knight…)
REI plays lots of 90’s Seattle rock- as well they should!
