Ok so, I recently just got deferred from early decision from Macaulay Honors College at Hunter and I submitted an updated resume to them to beef up my application but I don’t know what else I can possibly do to raise my chances of getting into the program. It kind of sucks too because I got accepted already into two schools (Adelphi Honors College with a significant scholarship that actually makes it cheaper than a good SUNY school such as Binghamton and I also got accepted into U of Scranton with a very nice scholarship as well… unfortunately though I dont want to go to these places and my parents want me to)… My SAT scores were a 660 on math, 680 on critical reading and 640 on writing (12 on essay). My GPA was a 3.6 unweighted and a 4.0 weighted. I’m obviously going to keep my grades up and send in a strong mid year report (meaning all the grades will be at least an A/in the 90s). Any suggestions as to what I can do to have a better chance of getting in? (They will not budge on no interviews). I’ve had several people including myself call to ask for interviews to see if they will budge with no such luck :(.

Maybe send a letter (perhaps handwritten) that states that you will definitely attend if accepted, and that Macaulay is your #1 school? Also keep them posted on anything awesome that you’ve done recently.

Handwritten letters don’t demonstrate an increased the level of sincerity-but I agree with the sentiments that such a letter should express. And if you have an additional letter of recommendation from someone who can add additional insight into why you are a good fit with that program, send it. Likewise, if school counselor (preferably one who knows you well) will go to bat for you, ask them to do so by calling the school and asking what else you might do to tip the balance in your favor-deferred isn’t a ‘no.’ And keep beefing up that application-let them know about any new awards, upward trend in grades, additional achievements…
