The Nostalgia Thread

A thread for things we remember from our childhood.

This brought back some memories. I still like Mallo Cups. I’m a sucker for anything marshmallow/chocolate such as s’mores, Mallomars…

I remember puffing on those candy cigarettes and biting off the tops of those little wax soda bottles. No candy lips or candy necklaces/bracelets on the list, though.

Hahaha…I remember those candy cigarettes! So cool to act so cool! I remember wearing the sear sucker rompers with elastic around the waist and legs when I was a preschooler.

I loved Mary Janes when I was a kid. Wouldn’t dare eat one now as they would probably pull out every filling in my mouth…

And Boston Baked Beans - loved those, too. My Mom used to get those for us if we behaved at the market.

Necco wafers. Especially the “chocolate” ones.

There was a date-nut bread in a can – I think the brand was Dromedary. I haven’t seen it in decades.

Vermont Country Store makes it, @VeryHappy.

Being a New Englander, we still have the brown bread in a can around here but I haven’t tried it for decades.

@NorthernMom61 The only time I buy Necco wafers is at Christmas. They make great roof tiles.

Marathon Bar. Great commercials, great candy bars.

Haven’t seen them in 30+ years.

I loved Marathon bars! What marketing genius! “Largest candy bar in the world” - it had that tape measure printed on the back. But it was thin and had those holes from the braided caramel, so by weight it probably wasn’t more than other candy bars.

I just read online that Cadbury still makes them under the Curly Wurly name:

Candy necklaces.

I saved the cardboard play money from my Mallo Cups for months to save up 500 points to send in for the big prize. I was so excited when it finally came in the mail only to find out that the prize was…a box of Mallo Cups. Ugh…did me in.

For years Thomas also made a great date nut bread (not in a can) - which they only put out for the holidays - alas they no longer make it (haven’t for years). It was pre-sliced and my mother would serve it with cream cheese spread on it.

Mallomars are also a seasonal product (fall into Christmas) - not for sale all year round.

Nabisco Pinwheels are fine sub for Mallomars but you can get Mallomars online.

This isn’t just food, is it?

Not much I miss from the supposed “good old days”.

candy: there used to be these 7 up type candy bars that had lots of different chocolate things . . .

but more than anything i’m nostalgic from when my kids were little. I went to our neighborhood’s annual fall party in the park yesterday - not because my middle school wanted me there, but because i wanted to remember how much fun it all was for my older kids when they were little – and i was hoping to see some neighborhood parents. but parents of 20-yr olds dont go to those kid-things any more. I felt nostalgic.

and middle school daughter thought i was stalking her!

Yes, I miss when our kids were preschoolers. They were ever so adorable and full of optimism and wide-eyed wonder. I still love them, but they are decades older now and more “grounded.”

My H loves Mallomars, but I can’t stand them as I am not a chocolate fan. He picked up a case of them at Costco a couple of weeks ago.

I remember the candy necklaces and the oh so cool candy cigarettes as well.

Silly Putty (especially on full color sunday comic pages)
Slinky (my sister was a whiz at untangling the thing)
Mountain Dew/Lime sherbet floats
Egg milkshakes for breakfast–an ice cream milk shake with a raw egg thrown in. Best breakfast ever.
Pixie stix–powdered sugar candy in a straw (which would get wet and gum up)
FIZZIES – only to eat of course
Pop rocks- how many can you eat at one time?
Jaw breakers
Candy cigarettes were the best!
“Man from U.N.C.L.E.” show.
Outfitting bike with cards and clothespins.
Riding on our bikes following the mosquito control trucks in the fog (I’ll probably die early…but it was fun.)
The incredibly big fish we used to be able to catch behind the house–it’s sadly gone from dredging and “improvements” over so many years.

@gouf78 I remember eating those pixie sticks and getting a rash in my mouth. And they had the really big ones in plastic.

We used to give pop rocks to our dog. The dog would be “huh?!”. She didn’t know what was going on.

The big plastic ones weren’t the same…that’s cheating if you didn’t have to eat paper to get to the candy.
Ever try the fizzies? They were like Kool-Aid alkaseltzer tablets. Burn the heck out your tongue.

My mom wouldn’t ever give me money for candy but I had a generous friend who got an allowance and bought candy on a regular basis.

Acme Supermarkets just started a promotion where you get stamps with every purchase and stick them on a form with the goal of accumulating enough to get free Farberware. This brought back memories of being the official stamp sticker for my mother’s S&H green stamps, which could be redeemed for all sorts of things and which were a “thing” for many years… The stamps weren’t self-sticking then, so the task involved a LOT of saliva. But oh the satisfaction of completing a whole “book” of stamps! I have no memory of any of the prizes we must have redeemed–for a kid, the means was far more interesting than the ends.
