The Notebook . . . have I been living under a rock?

Eh, Nicholas Cage is ok, I guess.

I loved him in Birdy and Moonstruck, haven’t seen most of his others.
( Interesting that Mathew Modine read for Al, the role that Cage took)
I did enjoy the Reddit meme.

He’s not “hot” just kind of funny in movies in a ham handed way.

I know who Ryan Goslings is but not the Notebook. I thought it’s another electronic thread.

I like the concept of a “courtship movie”. So did you have one and if so, what was it?

@bearpanther - Moonstruck
@saintfan - Like Water For Chocolate

When H & I first met, we went to a lot of movies. Our first movie date was two Woody Allen movies, Everything you always wanted to know about sex & Sleeper.
Annie Hall was probably our courtship movie.

@bearpanther - Moonstruck

@emeraldkity4 - Annie Hall

Saintfan, we actually have a number of them as we both really enjoy movies:

Moonstruck
When Harry Met Sally…
Working Girl
Say Anything

Those are special ones off the top of my head. :slight_smile: We own them all and watch them at least once a year even now, probably more.

LOVE Working Girl! It’s the one thing that I actually liked Melanie Griffith in when she was still young and fresh and un-improved

My husband’s and my courtship movies were… spaghetti westerns! I was a huge movie snob, in college worked at a renown film archive, I saw everything, loved old movies, etc. Then I start dating his literature PhD student who liked – gasp! – Clint Eastwood. Yikes! I was mortified, but after taking him to 3 or 4 “art” films (some of which, I admit, were pretentious poop) I reluctantly agreed to see The Wild Bunch. Nice date movie, huh? And you know what? I LOVED it, and agreed to give Sergio Leoni a try. Thirty years later we’re still together.

I have never seen The Notebook nor many of the more contemporary films. Have seen more of the films shown as Classic Turner movies because D enjoys them and I like keeping her company.

I have started watching more of the movies available for free on long flights, especially when we fly 8-10+ hours and can have as much viewing as we like. Probably would never pay to see most of them anywhere–theater, Netflix or airplane, but it does help pass the time. Have watched up to 5+ on a flight.

If my kids asked me, I’d encourage them to stick to better known classics like Shakespeare, popular musicals or movies that won a ton of academy awards if they were using them in essays. S doesn’t know much about movies and would steer clear. D likes Classic Turner movies, even tho many are black and white.

I have a feeling that Star Wars is probably one of the first movies dh and I saw together - along with his roommate who all he could say afterwards was “Ooooh the graphics! the graphics!”

The love stories in Star Wars aren’t exactly inspiring. The burning question was are you a Luke or Han Solo kind of girl? It was the Team Edward or Team Jacob of its time.

Is there a question? Han Solo all the way!

I’m with you but there was a Team Luke contingent . . . those who like to play it safe ;)

First, Nicolas Cage is definitely not on my list - though I loved Moonstruck.

Courtship movies - Bull Durham & Crossing Delancey.

I’m not crazy for Nicholas cage in the same way that I’m crazy about . . . say . . . Robert Downey Jr. He’s just funny in the roles that he plays in a campy sort of way.
