The NYC bike path incident?

Suspect is originally from Uzbekistan. He rented the truck today. Foreign nationals are among the victims.

Received a text from my brother in NYC this afternoon when I was away from news telling me all his family was home and safe - it makes me sick that we have to do this “all present and accounted for” at each tragedy - that when we hear of an incident we have to quickly sweep our mind to think if we have any loved ones to be concerned about.

Especially gets my gut when I hear it was near a school and involved kids out and about (heard a story tonight about kids who were walking near the area after being released from school).

My heart goes out to the victims of this tragedy. I am a bit dismayed about the coverage. We will pull out all of the stops for this because the perpetrator was Muslim yet 600 people were either killed or injured just 4 weeks ago and now you dont hear anything about it.

It is not an act of desperation but a demonstration of hatred for the civilized world.

Sigh. No one is making fun of people who pray. It’s a commentary on how we as a country react to different events based on who committed a crime and what tool was used to kill.

Honestly, one has to be purposely ignoring things if you don’t see/hear the difference in how we respond to a white shooter vs a Muslim who drives a car through people.

Pray all you want- but all we do when there is a shooter is pray. When we have something like this, we immediately start doing preventative measures. There are already sidewalk barriers up in NY. We have to be groped at the airport and can’t bring a water bottle past security because of something that’s happened less than 10 times in the last two decades.

But have we done a damn thing since a terrorist shot nearly 600 people a month ago?

No. We haven’t.

5 of the 8 people killed were from Argentina, visiting for a 30th college reunion. So sad.

As a completely unrelated comment, @sylvan8798, that is a beautiful picture.

I am so tired of depressing, awful things. It just never stops. I want to see some goodness and happiness going on in the world.

Have to disagree with #22. As horrible, HORRIBLE as the LV shooting was, sadly the quantity of coverage of any major news story will decrease as time passes. I have continued to see several articles still in the news in recent days (e.g. a couple that survived the shooting but sadly died in a car accident a few weeks later, an update just a few minutes ago about the absence of any bump stock regulations, an update about an officer accidentally firing his weapon in Paddock’s suite, continued questions bout the shooting timeline, etc). And an ad “Las Vegas Strong” continues to run on TV. So to say that “you don’t hear anything about it” now is disingenuous, and to imply that it is because of race or religion seems without merit. The news “pulled out all the stops” as you say, for the LV coverage, as well it should have, when it occurred and there were continued updates. Sadly, its likely the quantity of news coverage on yesterday’s NYC incident will decline, and will be yesterday’s news in 4 weeks too.

Disgusted with Governor Cuomo’s response last night… comments in nature of “this doesn’t affect us and we’re going on, business as usual” yet not one mention of the victims. Imagine if your child or loved one was mowed down by this terrorist? Cuomo didn’t even catch his breath or take a moment to consider the loss…just treating this as something we accept and New Yorkers are so strong we don’t miss a beat.

29 Did you not read that the Governor also lauded the first responders and sent thoughts and prayers to the families and victims as well as noting it reminds us of how precious life is? The advice after these events is that life goes on and that the terrorists win if we cave in to fear.

I had the opposite thought on the coverage as #23. Even here in the metropolitan area, the major networks went to regular programming at 8 pm. There was a lot of coverage of the Vegas shooting and shooter, particularly (and ongoing) in trying to determine his motive. In this case, the motive is pretty clear.

If #22 means that the politicians have responded differently to Vegas vs NYC, there is certainly evidence of that.

After Vegas and some other attacks, this did not seem to cause the same level of shock and horror or full-time news coverage and yet it should have. Are we becoming too jaded about these events?

@mom2and You have a point, it may be a function of it occurring in NY and not far from the WTC from what I understand. I guess it’s all in the news stations that we consume.

A new day and parents, children and families in NYC have to go on with their life. They can grieve, but they must continue. Parents may hug a little harder as they let their children board the bus or subway to school, kids may be a little more suspicious as they walk down the street. The level of fear or uncertainty is at the forefront again this morning, yet…they must move forward.

I saw Cuomo’s speech and that is how I took it. We are affected but not broken.

I thought Cuomo’s speech was good, as (unfortunately) he usually is in these circumstances. He did speak about the victims, saying something about people going about their lives on a beautiful fall day who wouldn’t be coming home to their families.

Here is the quote I remember from yesterday:

“Cuomo, offered similar thoughts, saying that the victims 'left the house this morning, they were enjoying the beautiful West Side of Manhattan on a beautiful Fall day. ‘They and they are not going to return and the shock and the pain is going to be very real.’”

I heard about it (initially reported as a “road rage” incident) shortly before DD (who works a block away) texted me that she was ok. So scary. Innocent people mowed down.

Cuomo just spoke again - reiterating his words yesterday immediately after the attack. He was eloquent as usual when speaking about incidents such as what occurred yesterday.

New York Strong

Of course. We all know with certainty, that there is nothing but a vast wasteland west of the Hudson. (sarcasm, here folks!)

Think about all the constant barrage of news stories when a snow storm is about to hit Manhattan, with a snow fall amount that folks in Minneapolis or Chicago would only yawn.

Post #s have changed since some posts were removed, so references to previous posts are out of sync. Post #30 now references post # 30! I believe references to #23 is now post #22.
