The *Official* 2009 AP World History Thread

^I think the raw score formula stays the same, but the ranges for the different scores changes each year with the curve. Especially since WHAP is still a relatively new AP, the curve probably changes more often than the older ones.

how did you guys split up the time periods for the COT?

DBQ- easy, same as apeuro but from the opposite view  .I’m thinking at least a 6 on this one, although i’m not sure i was clear enough on the bias’. It was 4/5 pages(can’t really remember.
COT- I knew this but I chose to do the CC first, so i ran out of time on this one, and it was only about a page long. I had the thesis+ the first paragraph on the continuities… hopefully a 3, if i missed 14 on MC, which would be the worst case scenario, since i found it relatively easy, then I would need a 3 to get a 5
CC- was great! Really i have a hard time retaining info on latin america, so the day before i studied up on it. Wrote about slave trade, why north America needed less than latin and the Caribbean, how the slaves were treated, interracial mixing, abolition movements + the Haitian revolution. It was 3 pages, also thinking that it was at least a 6

One worry, because I wrote the 3rd essay before the second, I left about 2 pages to write the 2nd one. However, my 2nd essay was not nearly complete, leaving two blank pages between it and my 3rd essay. Do you guys think this is ok, will they still find it?

^ Yeah, they I think they should be bale to find it as long as you put the essay you were doing(A,B, or C) on the upper right-hand corner.

@nycdave21 , yeah it’s authentic. The raw score formula stays the same and how sounditout said the curve changes a few points, but not much. If I’m not mistaken, that’s the formula for the 2002 version.

@Terminator1220, Oh…But with this generous formula, why did only 48% of the students taking hte test got 3 and up? I mean i was playing around with the formula and if you get 35 MC right and 35 MC wrong, and get 4,3,and another 3 on the essay, you still can past with a 3…

Wait you had to write A, B, or C at the top? I assumed question number meant 1, 2, or, 3.

^Don’t worry about it. They will figure it out.

This is how I split up my essays:

DBQ: Two condescending european viewpoints, two african appeals to a higher order (either the old social order or religion), 3-4 african documents in favor of military action (but also subtly conceding to european society). I said all of the african documents together recognized euro superiority. For the two additional documents, I put an unbiased european viewpoint and an african child for a fresher view.

CCOT: Feel like I went off the prompt a little…wasn’t really sure how to address interactions. Wrote that Roman + Han Empires dominated early on, with the middle east as an intermediary and africa as a source of raw materials. Then Rome fell in 476, Islam rose in the 7th century, and the Islamic empires dominated along with China’s Tang and Song dynasties. After that, the Mongols conquered and unified the Silk Road. In the period after the Mongols, the Italian peninsula underwent the Renaissance and sea routes become more widely used (Mediterranean and Indian). Mentioned Ming China’s participation and the voyages of Zheng He…and that the Silk Road was declining. For continuties, I wrote that it always served as a conduit for trade. For changes, Islam became a major trade item during the centralized Islamic Empires… Mentioned the bubonic plague briefly in one sentence…

CC: This was a strange prompt for me. I mentioned the peninsulares + creoles social caste in Latin America, along with the Haiti revolution and Brazil remaining a monarchy under Pedro. Wrote that North America had a more unified ideology compared to the fragmented Latin America nations…and that NA’s more unified ideology was responsible for the successful 1776 declaration of independence and revolution. Mentioned that Latin America had much more trouble unifying and breaking away, and held on to the colonial order for much longer. Contrasted their political systems (NA being democratic and accepting, while Latin America was often fascist, militaristic, or totalitarian…which led to the oppression of minorities). Didn’t mention the slaves at all, except for one sentence in my opening paragraph about the slave trade. Wished I had mentioned it, but at the time I thought I should write something more unique.

Estimating about 14 wrong on the multiple choice…hoping for a 5, but expecting a 4. Had 2 and 1/2 pages for each essay…not alot compared to you guys.

Hey does anyone know if this website is accurate? Here is the website: [AP World History Exam Grade Calculator](http://tech-shep.com/Calculate/APWorldGrade.php)

Someone posted a formula for raw points and the curve a few pages back. Think that one is fairly accurate.

Edit: Here it is.

Raw Score (including -0.25 for each wrong answer) x 0.8571 =
DBQ Grade x 2.2222 =
Compare and Contrast Grade x 2.2222 =
Continuity/Change Over Time Grade x 2.2222 =
Add them all together without rounding till the end.

74-120 = 5
60-73 = 4
43-59 = 3
27-42 = 2
0-26 = 1

@nycdave21 yeah that’s true it sounds easy and all, but it’s accurate and what you said about why some people don’t gte 3s is because they either don’t study or don’t even try, in my class, more than half found MC hard, some skipped like 12 and they had their heads down 30min into the free response, they just give up and that’s bound to happen in other places too, so that’s why people don’t get 3,4 ,or 5, cause they don’t give the test importance… but I know the formula’s accurate it was in the 2002 released version, and
yankeeman24 that should be fine, it’s just they told us A, B, or C in our class, but Ive heard of both ways.

DBQ-I split the documents up into 3 different groups; positive reactions, negative reactions, and actions.
CCOT-Continuities=exchange of technologies, religions, ideas. Changes=those who dominated the route (muslim empire to mongols), competition with other routes (with the growth of Indian ocean maritime trade routes), decline in european trade with the movement of the black death.
CC-Similarities=racial ideologies caused for racism, rebellion and revolution. Differences=these revolutions let north america to grow as a world power, while latin america was still economically dependent on Europe.

For the DBQ, I grouped doucments like they were from the same country, but different reactions, Nationalism of Africa(doc. 5, the picture and another on i forgot), European advance technologies, and foreign capitalism of Europe(Doc.1 and some thing else)…IS that good or acceptable grouping?lol…and one more question, When I added the additional document, I put there should be one on Shakazulu, Belgium, and King Leopold and hteir harsh treatment to the Africans. It should have been Leopold the second, will the graders take one point off?

For DBQ I grouped into initial response (defiance), military response (resistance), and how it turned out - good for ethiopia vs. bad for others

MC was fairly easy, I left 4 blank and will probably end up about 54/70 or so correct…

DBQ- very very very easy. Scramble for Africa? What an easy prompt, not that I’m complaining or anything. We did a practice prompt on the global flow of silver in APWH earlier this year that was twice as difficult. If I didn’t get a 9 on this one, I’ll be disappointed.

COT- Luckily, I looked at my Princeton review book the night before and read up a little on Silk Road history. I think I did pretty good on it. The only thing I question is that I didn’t specify the groups of people that caused the period of decline and the specific religions that spread…Probably got a 7 on this one.

CC- At this point, I only had about 20 minutes to write this one. I didn’t really know all that much about it, anyway. I wrote about creoles, mulattoes, mestizos, etc…but I think I got their social order completely out of whack. lol. North America portion was typical slave labor/political freedoms essay. Probably a 6-7 on this one.

Any guesses on what my score will be?

I thought the DBQ was fairly simple
I loved the CCOT, i know a lot about the silk road
And when I saw the CC essay, I freaked. I’m clueless about Latin Americans! #)%()$(!)(@*# I just BSed it. Talked about slave trade, slave rebellions, etc.

Did you guys know the MC questions by having seen them before [in reviews, books, etc.] or did you use your overall knowledge to answer it?

The MCs questions was answered with mostly knowledge and some help from the review book… i do not think any of the questions on the test were on the review book

I didn’t feel like starting a new thread so I’m just going to ask here, hope you guys don’t mind. For those of you who have already gotten their ap world history results back, how did you score compared to what you expected? Do you think there was a generous curve or a not so generous curve? I refuse to call and it’s still going to be a long time until I get my results so I need some assurance!
Thanks!

The ap world history exam was so easy that i expected a 5. I did receive a 5 when i got my scores from the mail. I think the curve was alright.

Very generous curve, believe me. I know for a fact that I blew two of the essays. I didn’t study at all during the school year or before the test, and my result (pleasantly) surprised me. :]
