The *Official* *** AP Chem Free Response 2009 Thread

oh **** the AP chem FR.
i took 3 years of chem (1 year gen, 2 years IB)
i still found it incredibly, seemingly impossible to solve. the MC was easy though.

i don’t understand how people who found the MC easy couldn’t do the free response…

the MC covered everything, and the free response just required general knowledge of a few specific areas o__O

I thought the FRQs were much easier than MC. #2 was just a bunch of arithmetic, thankfully.

some of the FR questiosn were a bit confusing. Question 2: What the hell? How am I suppose know how to do this. This question was a lab and I have disadvantage, but it was feasible to do. I just hope that I receive a 5 on the exam. I think I can accept a 4.

Which is stronger:HOCl or HOBr? and how would you explain it in terms of Ka? Also how would you explain if HOI is stronger or weaker than the other acids mentioned above in terms of chemical bonding?

Whatever one had the larger Ka is stronger

HOI is weaker because I is less electronegative than Br. Electrons aren’t drawn away from the O-H bond toward the I much. On the other hand, Br is more electronegative, meaning electrons are drawn away from the O-H bond and toward Br. H can then “pop off” more easily from HOBr.
