ACT 36 (E36, M35, R36, S35)
SAT IIs: taking Math2 and Physics in october (i know, i’m a huge procrastinator) but hoping for high 700s

APs
USHistory: 5
BC Calculus: 5
Physics C Mechanics: 5 (doing E&M next year, will explain later)
English Lang: 5
senior year taking Stats, MV calculus(although not actually an ap, but still a college-level class), Physics E&M and Chemistry, English Lit, Computer Science, and French
so at my school, we have something called AP Chem-Phys where we learn a unit in chemistry for about 2 weeks and then switch to physics and by the end of the year we’ve covered half of each course, which is why I only took physics mechanics this year. In the end it’s pretty much the same thing except you get the best teachers in the school and you’re in a class with the top 30 or so kids in a grade of 700+

ECs:
volleyball and track frosh/soph
xc junior/senior (could be on varsity senior year, don’t know yet)
JETS (junior engineering technical society) competition junior (and senior) year
Physics olympiad senior year (if the competition is after I submit applications, does this count?)

Community Service:
relay for life frosh-senior, top team each year and serving on planning committee (for my city, which is a suburb of chicago, not just my school) junior/senior year
volunteer at animal shelter soph-senior
project excite junior/senior (started by my teacher years ago, helps minority kids from my city’s grade schools get interested in science)

Awards/Recognition:
1st place IIT international (really national, plus a few Indonesian kids) bridge building competition
NHS plus my school’s own honor societies frosh/soph

Also I have been “interning” with a civil engineering professor at Northwestern - basically he gives me data and stuff to work with and I do my own thing. The goal is for me to develop my own experiment that I can submit to competitions and stuff

So first of all I was wondering if my lack of leadership and weak ECs would hurt my chances a lot - I tend to focus more on academic stuff and community service.

But more importantly, even if I do get in I will have a very hard time paying (esp. with the increased tuition), so I was wondering how likely it is that, as an OOS, I would get enough financial aid/scholarships. My family income is currently about 75k, but the thing is my dad lost his company a couple years ago and we inherited a lot of debt to pay off, so we would really need a ****load of money from Berkeley in order for me to go. Is this pretty much impossible?

I’m Asian American.

Academics: My school GPA sucks cuz i got a lot of A minuses. I moved schools in october of 10th grade b/c the school i was

Because i moved schools after the school year started sophomore year, i couldn’t take any APs/honors sophomore year.

Hello everyone,

So I’m not really sure how this works, but I thought I’d give this a shot…

I’m a senior in nuclear engineering at UW-Madison, and I’m applying to graduate programs here over the next few months. My fiancee is going to Harvard Medical School in a month, and I’ve been working really hard to finish up my undergrad so I can follow her. As I stand right now, I have the following statistics:

GPA:
3.500
Research:
1.5 years at the MST fusion reactor, nothing published
Summer biophysics international research in Bangalore, India, nothing published
Extra curriculars:
Project manager for Engineers Without Borders for 3 years
1 year with SAE Baja mechanical engineering student organization
1 semester of being a TA for an introductory engineering class
3 different university music groups (just as a personal note)
Volunteer experience:
Construction and design of two rainwater catchment systems in Hindiro, Rwanda
Surveying of a new clinic in Gashonye, Rwanda
Two design projects implemented for the Madison community
4 months with Young Scientists of America (teaching kids about science’s epicness)
Letters of Recommendation:
Two professors, both in engineering department (both should be really positive)
One from project coordinator at the fusion reactor (should be really positive, too)
GRE’s:
Verbal: 580 (80%)
Quantitative: 790 (91%)
Analytical Writing: 3.5 (26% - yikes…)
Other School Stuff:
Distinguished Scholar’s Program member (highest honors possible here in engineering)
Certificate in International Engineering
Summer study abroad experience in France (language/culture only, nothing technical)

That about does it, I guess. I’d like to apply to the MEMP program at MIT/Harvard, along with a couple of other departments (nuclear engineering, biomedical engineering, etc.). I’ve been kinda freaking out lately about my chances of being accepted to these programs, as they are extremely competitive. From what I’ve gathered, it seems that my application looks about average for those accepted to these programs, if maybe slightly below average…

Does anybody know if I’ve got a shot? I’d also like to apply to Yale, Brown, Columbia, and Cornell, but my heart is REALLY set on Boston (I miss her already…). I know that there are some smaller, less competitive programs in Boston, too - like Amherst, Tufts, and Northeastern - do I at least have a shot at these programs, too?

That about does it for my question - sorry for the MAJOR tl;dr… I’ve been having these concerns for a while, and I guess I just couldn’t take it anymore - I had to ask someone!!!

Thanks for your time!!

^^ What was the point of posting that in the Berkeley forum… -.-

@westie from what i have understood with my dealings with financial aid(will be doing a workstudy there next semester) Berkeley gives like hybrid merit/need scholarships. They look at your financial need and then give you merit from that…its kinda weird but hey it works. Also, they do NOT give ANY financial aid to cover the OOS tuition. Federal aid can cover that, but you won’t get any money from Cal for that.
