PLEASE CHANCE ME PPL! <3<3

Could someone chance me please, many thanks! (app’s a few posts up)

I’m a junior in Kentucky. I go to an extremely competitive private school.
Freshman year I took all Honors courses and got a 4.0
Sophomore year I took all Honors courses, but also experienced a drastic change in my life and resulted in a drop in my GPA- 3.3.
This year I am taking a mix of Honors and IB classes and will probably get all A’s.
Next year I plan on taking a full IB course load.

Will my sophomore year GPA ruin my chances of getting in to Berkeley? It is my DREAM school. I will also be a first generation college student and have very good ECs.

ok so I’m that lazy guy that didn’t study for the sat and barely studied in school.

Out of State for every college (from Puerto Rico)

I did not attend a traditional school like in the states. It’s the best school in the east but it has no AP classes, it started implementing honors classes this year, I’m in all of them(honors english, honors physics, honors math-Pre-calc II, and honors spanish). I plan to major in Astrophysics or maybe astrobiology. I’m always the first one to finish the assigned work in physics and usually just read in class. I talked with my physics teacher and my uncle(who’s a professor at the best college in PR) and they both told me I’d be wasting my time majoring so I’m sort of at a midway point.

GPA: 3.51 unweighted

took the sat twice without any prep, my best scores are:
640-CR
630-M
610-W

I’m a national hispanic merit recognition program scholar

went to a CTY introduction to astronomy summer course in RWU, Rhode Island and a Human Nature & Technology summer course in Princeton, New Jersey.

barely any EC’s: Track & Field long jump in 11th & 12th grade, origami club(yeah very prestigious._.), and Model UN.

I cannot pay anything above 5,000-10,000 so I can only consider colleges with excellent aid. That being said my likely choices are:

-Boston University
-Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute(long shot)
-University of Virginia(long shot)
-University of Colorado-Boulder
-Arizona State University- Barrett Honors College
-Honors College at University of Arizona
-Ohio State University
-University of Maryland- College Park

Chance me?

P.S. If you have any college suggestions/opinions, I would greatly appreciate them since I can’t visit any college.

*waste my time majoring in Puerto Rico

Being an international student will hinder your chances, but you should always try. ASU and OSU appear to be reasonable matches.

Chance me please?

I am the Secretary for our Key Club as well as the appointed Vice President next year. I am also the Youth Chair for the City Planning Committee (we orchestrate the annual city events like Christmas, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, etc. I organize all the youth and manage what they do). I am a competitor in Science Olympiad in two engineering events. I attended Awesome Math Summer Program two years in a row - AMSP is an extremely intensive Math Olympiad training program. I also tutor.

I’m planning on going into Comp Sci at the L&S. Ironically, I’m a huge humanities buff because it comes so easily to me, but I love science and engineering more, despite my lowest grades being from there.

My grades took a dip sophomore year because my parents divorced.

I am a first generation European immigrant and I go to High School in a fairly competitive part of Orange County, CA. My dad has a PhD and my mom has a Masters in two fields.

I am out of state, male, white, first generation college. I also graduated from high school in 2011 and have been working since - will this be a disadvantage?

Edited newspaper, captained debate, volunteered on political campaigns and started political club at school. Also Math team and Tennis Team.

I interned abroad earlier this year and have worked since I was in 10th grade. I do independent academic tutoring and work another job.

Chances?

Why not people responding, I guess I will do my part… (Keep in mind: these stats are REALLY GUESSES)
@aerialuser2: 30-50%, banking on 40%, low SATs and ACTs but great stats everywhere else pretty much! EECS is hard to get into. Btw, why do you want to be EECS as I don’t really see any computer science courses or involvement (or maybe did I skip it?)
@coolio19: 70-90%, banking on 85%, great everything, definitely shows interest in EECS, motivated to do more than school based on volunteer and internships
@fashion2345: 30-60%, banking on 50%, kind of below average SATs, okay APs (but I don’t think those matter much), good GPA though
@kentuckygirl: 20-60%, with that little information I can’t give you much, but remember that UC’s only look at sophomore and junior years for GPA
@aboveaverageguy: 20-50%, banking on 35%, kind of below average SATs and kind of low GPA, also, blowing off high school and not really studying is definitely not the mindset of the majority here, also Cal to be honest does not give great (or even any, I think) to international students
@Rosario1994: 50-80%, banking on 70% (depends on school though, for Engineering or Chemistry, will be lower), good SATs and GPA (assuming that 4.0 is unweighted, if weighted than of course lower percentage), average ECs, note also that Berkeley doesn’t accept recommendations unless you’re told so in like January (that is for borderline applicants)
@camesawconquered: 50-80%, banking on 65% (for L&S), decent GPA, average SATs, good ECs, its good that Berkeley is your top choice (mine too!)
@cjp2012: 70-100%, banking on 90%, amazing stats, average ECs, but great work experience. Btw, what are working since graduation? That will definitely affect your chances (I assumed something like interning somewhere)

** My primary concerns: 1) my extracurriculars are not very strong, 2) my courseload may not be as competitive as I previously thought, and 3) I may not stand out as prominently as I would like to from other applicants who share my GPA rank. **

UC GPA: 4.37 (not entirely sure if I calculated this correctly)
Unweighted: 3.98
Weighted: 4.3-4.45

Courses (I am only mentioning honors and AP; all of my other classes are college-prep level):

9th grade
Honors World Civilizations I: A
Honors English I: A

10th grade
A.P. European History: A
Honors American Literature: A

11th grade
Honors Chemistry: A/A-
A.P. U.S. History: A
A. P. English Language: A

12th grade
A.P. Calculus AB: Currently an A-
A.P. English Literature: Currently an A
A.P. U.S Government (a spring semester course only)

Scored a 5 on all three AP exams to date.

SAT (I took it once): 2190
CR: 760, Math: 630, Writing: 800

SAT Subject:
U.S. History: 750; Literature: 730 (on the 2nd sitting)

Tutoring middle school students as a member of CSF since 10th grade
Campus writing center tutor since 11th grade
Volunteered to help the visually disabled for two summers (approx. 8 hrs/wk the first summer and 15 hrs/wk this past summer)

Personal statements:
For prompt #1: I seek to forge a new path that differs from the one my mother took.
For prompt #2: Discussing a novel I am working on and my identity as a writer

Miscellaneous:
Asian middle class CA resident
Class rank: Top quintile. According to the UC application site, I am ELC eligible within my high school.
Commended Student for the PSAT/NMQT
AP Scholar

I am applying as a declared English major. I am currently thinking of a double major in Creative Writing (or English if Creative Writing is not offered in some form) and Economics.

From what I understand, the Berkeley’s process tends to be a bit more holistic than the others, which makes it more random, and chancing all the more meaningless. Just my 2 cents, though.

^ True. If UCB/UCLA’s admission rates dropped into the teens over the next several years (which they probably could not do even if they wanted to), they would become the Ivies of the UC system–and arguably the public school system of higher ed, since they’re within the top 10 schools that receive the most applicants.

Of course, one could debate the merits of the holistic review process, but that’s another discussion entirely.

For kentuckygirl, I am sorry but unless you overcame a serious illness or had a major crisis in your life, your sophomore grades will hurt you. Make sure you have other schools in mind. Your leverage is being from Kentucky and your competition for spots at Cal will come from your home state.

Aboveaverageguy, go to a school that gives you a full scholarship and honors college status. Bear in mind you may be required to keep a certain GPA to retain your scholarship and honor college status. University of Nebraska and Texas at Dallas also have a scholarship for you. UC schools will always require a minimum contribution of $9,000 per year from every student no matter what their income level.

Alwaysawriter, you have a shot as your scores and grades are good and you have a specified interest with a lot of experience in that area. I would still apply to other schools though as you a have a chance at Cal, but it is very competitive.

Tkdjordan, I’ll be honest, your test scores are too low. You would have to have a major hook (like being a top level athlete) and even then it might be a stretch. Be sure to apply to schools that are more in-line with a good chance of acceptance. You will be more successful there than at a highly competitive school like Cal and this will lead to a more successful future for you.

Best of luck to all of you. Most students enjoy whichever school they end up choosing to attend. Just try to make sure your choice is the right fit for you to be successful.

Hello,
I am an OOS student from Maryland, American Citizen, Chinese ethnicity. Enrolled in a very competitive school, one of the top counties in the U.S. Applying for UCLA Undeclared Life Science, and Berkeley Undeclared/Pre-Business Administration/Letters & Science.

I didn’t do very well in the beginning of high school, but I stepped up my game in 11th Grade.

10th Grade:
AP NSL: B/B
Honors English 10: B/B
Honors Algebra 2: D/B
Forensics Science: C/C
Honors Chemistry: C/B
Honors Chinese 3: B/B

11th
AP World History: A/A
AP Literature & Comp: B/A
AP Psychology: B/B
Honors Physics: A/B
Honors Precalculus C/A
Honors Chinese 4: A/A

I am currently taking a rigorous curriculum in 12th grade, consisting of 4 AP’s, Anatomy, and a 2 Period Engineering Course from University of Maryland.

Oct. 2011 SAT I
660 R 660 M 610 W- 1930

Oct. 2012 SAT I
710 R 700 M 690 W - 2100

In my personal statement, I talked about my high emphasis on responsibility, and commitment, based on need to take care of my deaf brother, while keeping a positive attitude towards the future. Hopefully it was alright, I got a lot of positive feedback from my peers and teachers, but I’m not sure.

Please give me your feedback! I’d like to know how my out of state status could affect my admission, since I’ve been told many different things, about how OOS needs higher grades, or the UC system is more lenient on OOS, based on its financial crisis.
Also, I know that my GPA during 10th grade is…ehhh, but how will UC look at it? Will they notice my jump from roughly a 2.8 to a 3.6/7? I’ve been taking rigorous courses all throughout high school.

Able to pay for full freight, if that matters.

Thank You!

Forums, after many sessions with admissions officers and some personal experience, I have learned that colleges would rather see a high GPA and slightly lower test scores than the reverse. Keep your other options open as the top UCs might be a stretch. You will end up someplace great. Apply to other grat schools as well so you have options.
