I am a California resident that goes to a highly competitive Catholic High School with a cap on AP’s. I would like to major in Electrical Engineering, but will probably apply Undecided in order to increase my chances. My PSAT isn’t the best and I’m wondering what I need to get on the SAT I am taking in the upcoming month in order to increase my chances (ie. what would be my chance if I get a 2100 on the SAT?)

I’m only a junior, so I still have a year to raise my cumulative GPA and will be taking some other AP’s next year.

UC GPA: 3.85

Strengths- GPA, Class Rank, ACT score

I have a pretty low UC GPA, 4.05, but I have a 4.6 weighted and 3.74 unweighted. I also have a 2350 SAT score. Will Berkeley look at my weighted GPA as well as my UC GPA or only the capped one. I took over 18 honors and AP semesters, yet the UC GPA caps me at 8 which lowers it a lot.

What do you all think?

Berkeley would only look at the unweighted GPA I think. But Berkeley would still look at your honors and AP classes to look for strength in schedule, or lack thereof.

Persianmom:

You’re GPA is so good…is that just all A’s and A-'s?

I’m a junior. Berkeley is my first choice school and I was wondering if I should hold onto this goal or look for other options. GPA is projected. I’m hoping I get all A’s. Schoolwork difficulty has never been a problem for me; it’s just a matter of laziness.

Profile

[ul]
[]California resident
[]public school ranked 193rd in CA. it does not offer honors or IB classes. 1 AP is offered sophomore year and the rest of the APs are typical… I think.
[li]applying undeclared major (as of right now I’m looking towards letters and science for comp. sci. but I heard it’s better to apply undeclared)[/li][/ul]

Academics

[ul]
[]UC GPA 4.33
[li]Unweighted GPA: 4.0/4.0 [/li][li]SAT: 2200//CR-700/M-730/W-770[/li][li]SAT II: gonna take Math II in the spring for sure. maybe Spanish and chem.[/li][li]APs by time of application: Psych, Calc AB (super weak I know, I was a lazy idiot in 10th grade when we chose courses and didn’t want a lot of homework)[/li][li]12th grade courseload: 4 APs and 1 regular (we’re only allowed 6 periods and one of the APs takes up 2 /crey/)[/li][]I’m taking stats, chem, and a comp sci related course this summer at my local community college.
[/ul]

ECs

[ul]
[]JV basketball [9]: MVP award, coach’s award, all-league award
[li]Varsity basketball [10-12]: division 1, state level, ~15 hrs/week. season just started so who knows what’ll I get this year.[/li][li]Varsity track [11-12], Varsity XC [12]: both of these I’m joining for the first time this and next year b/c I was recruited by the coach. that being said I probably will receive significant awards. he said I could be recruited. wish he had seen me earlier lol.[/li][li]Church leadership organization [10-12]: big fundraisers for charities (~$3000 total just last year), tons of community service, I’ve various leadership positions during our projects[/li][]NHS by the end of this year
[]I dedicate what free time I have to teach myself to program and code
[]paid Spanish tutor, other than that no job because my dad won’t let me work
[/ul]

Personal Statements, are these good topics? This will probably be the most difficult yet most critical factor for me because my writing is below average. Not sure if these even match the prompts. Please give me specific feedback if possible!

[ul]
[li]First prompt: basketball’s influence to me as a sport, stress reliever, family (teammates), etc.[/li][li]Second prompt: how literally any little thing in the world amazes me. something someone wouldn’t take a second look at I’d spend hours at the library researching about. it’s led me to an extremely vast knowledge of various subject fields and I think it also displays my active thinking and eagerness to learn.[/li][/ul]

scodesario:

Berkeley is a great goal for someone with great stats like you. You also might want to consider some Ivy League schools, Stanford, and some safety schools. You’re on the right track!

Chance me?
UC GPA: 4.47
Unweighted GPA: 3.96
Weighted GPA: 4.46 (not reported by school, but gave me a rank of 27/452)

Out-Of-State

SAT Reasoning Scores: 2220 // M:770, CR:700, W: 750
SAT II Scores: Physics:800, Math II: 800, World History: 770, US History: 720

AP Tests (9 taken, 6 more by end of graduation, total of 12 AP classes):
Calculus AB (5)
Calculus BC (5)
Physics B (5)
Physics Cs (5, 5)
Computer Science A (5)
World History (5)
US History (5)
Chinese (4 Non-native)
To be taken: American/Comparative Gov, Micro/Macro Econ, Chemistry, Lit

The only weakness in my schedule would be my decision to take Regular English my Junior year rather than the AP Lang course offered, but I am taking AP Lit this year. Also explained that I didn’t continue from Chinese 5 (AP) to 6 because the Chinese 6 class is really an independent study thing that sits at the back of the Chinese 5 class. On the other hand, I’m in accelerated math taking Differential Equations.

Applying to Engineering (Computer Science)

Essays:
1: Music as the world that I have come from (playing piano since age 5, many family musicians, almost always listening to music) fostering creativity

2: Something that didn’t go according to plan (even though I expected it to turn out fine) but I came out of it with a positive attitude and in retrospect things went a lot better than if they had gone according to plan

Other:
AP Scholar Award (Sophomore year)
National AP Scholar Award (Junior year)
National Merit commended student
Auditioned and selected as participant in All-State band (Junior year, Baritone Saxophone)
Participated in Hackathon, our team won an award

You should NOT apply undecided if you want to do EE at Berkeley. Even if you do get accepted this will severely decrease your chances of getting into the engineering school. So yes, great got into Berkeley, but you’re going to become a Spanish major  Don’t play the chance game here; it’s just stupid. Also don’t think about applying undecided for engineering. I remember reading somewhere that undecided is the most competitive for engineering (but u might want to double check).

To your chances. How is ur UC gpa lower than your weighted? It should be higher than 4.35. So just taking the supposed score in hand, you have a normal Berkeley GPA. You will need to get a higher SAT score though, at least above 2000 to be seriously considered unless there are circumstances outside your control that lower your score. Also tip from me, you don’t want to take 3 AP sciences in a year unless your school’s science classes are a joke. This will get you more Bs and Cs than As. It’s better to have one or two As in a AP science class than 3 Bs. By the way how are you fulfilling your a-g courses when all you have are science and math classes? And how does a school that lets you take all 5 APs in a year have an AP cap?

Applying for Computer Engineering.

GPA: I have no idea since we have percentage. Generally speaking, really good grades for Computers and Maths (90%-100%). Average grades for rest. (75% - 80%)

Indian Resident

SAT Reasoning Scores (by section) or ACT scores: M:760, W:770, R:650

  • A few intra school awards
  • About 300 hrs of service
  • Duke of Edinburgh - Silver

Any other significant accomplishments in a specific field.
Dunno. Developed a few apps for Windows App store.

Courses - Phy, Chem, Math, Computer Science, English

I don’t have any APs, college courses, or work experience.

What are my chances? What about UCLA?

I’m a junior, but it is possible someone could still chance me?

UW GPA: 3.8
UC GPA: 4.1
W GPA: 4.1
W GPA (w/Honors) : 4.4

SAT I : 2190 (710 M, 720 CR, 760 W) → I will probably retake this in the spring.
Ranking : Not published by the school but I am most likely in the top 10% of about 400 students. My school is about #40 in CA, by the way; pretty competitive for a public school.

AP Courses :
(Sophomore)

  • European History (5)
  • Environmental Science (4)
    (Junior)
  • Biology
  • US History
  • Calculus AB
  • Art History
  • Physics B → Question: is it worthwhile to take this if I am taking Physics C next year?
    (Senior)
  • Government
  • Calculus BC
  • English Language or Literature
  • Chemistry
  • Physics C - Mechanics & E + M

Extracurricular Activities / Awards, etc :
Comm Service : Science Museum (60 hr), local Hospital (150 hr)

  • Peer Tutor for Humanities / English - 4 hours a week, very enjoyable
  • Volunteer at local Art Museum - I am passionate about this.
  • Peer Counselor - Work directly with Counseling Department and the student body. Also tutor math through the smaller Tutoring Department.
  • Art - I’m not sure if this is a formal EC, but it something I am very passionate about. I will probably enter some art-based contests to reinforce this as an interest, but I’m not sure how much colleges care, as I am not majoring in art. However, I love science because I see the same underlying structures in both science in art with visualization.
  • I have been to some conferences as a guest on ‘scholarship’ to attend, via application - National Environmental Health Conference, AREA Conference (relating to Scientific Tech), Biotechnology-related Conference, etc.
  • Debate Club for 2 Years (though this is more minor, amateur debating and I’m not sure if it’s worth noting).
  • French Club for 2 years (baguettes!)
  • Science Olympiad for Soph Year. Did not find it rewarding.
  • Student Senate for 2 years.
  • I am a student body representative on a school board that plans out part of the school budget. 2 school-year term.
  • Awards : Student Recognition in AP Environmental Sci and AP Bio, probably because I ask a lot of questions and do quasi-experiments outside of class.

If anyone can provide any input, I would be very grateful. Thank you!

please help, very appreciated.

Anandc - your 9 and 10 grades are really good. However, you said that you have several B’s in your freshman year? That may be a problem as UC adcom looks for an upward slope in grades. Get good Sat 1 scores (over 2200) and Sat2 scores, with great essays ,and you have a good shot!
