@sunshinejf Thank you! I’m from Ohio so I dont know much about the UC system

UC Berkeley has been my dream school since i was a kid and I’ve always wanted to go there. I am an international student and have applied for the coming fall semester. I intend on majoring in Economics with a minor in international relations which means I’m applying to the College of Letters and Science. Do you think Im a good candidate for Berkeley?

We do not use GPA’s from where i am but we use letter grades and overall I have had mostly A’s and B’s in high school. We give O-Level exams which are examinations under the cambridge board. I got a pretty good O-Level Result with 4A*'s 4A’s and 2B’s. The examination that follows that is the A-level in which i do not have a good grade. I have 1A 2B’s and a C.

Also my SAT score is not what i should have gotten but can not appear for it again. I have an 1800 SAT Score.

I have been involved in a large number of extra curriculars throughout high school and have done a lot of community service as well. These range from Drama and Theater to volunteering at fund raisers and working at an NGO operated school.

Hey guys,
Berkeley is literally one of my top colleges. I think I have a decent chance but I would like some more insight…
here are my stats…

I’m in the top 11% batch of 1300 + students
SAT - 2190 → 750M 730W 710CR
Math II - 800 World History 800 ----> SAT Subject Tests
I have done a bunch of EC’s
Debate for all 4 years - State finalist for 2 years, state qualifier all 4 years
Tennis All 4 years - Varsity from sophomore year
Youth and Government 4 years
NHS and other volunteering put together 250 + hours of volunteering
and more actiivites (haven’t put them all on here)

Also I’ve taken I think 7 ap exams (bc calc,world history, euro, us history, English human geo compsci . 5 on all of them cept 4 on compsci and I’m taking 7 ap’s this yr( physics c stat macro micro music theory Spanish English}

Major = chemical

hahah although this is the official chance post… a majority of the posts are just chances not responses ahahh

I’m sure this is like nothing compared to so many other applicants to Berkeley, especially the out of state and international ones. But might as well take a shot. Before some of you rip me a new one (kidding!), holistic admissions will hopefully be my friend here. And if this format makes it look really long… Sorry… It’s just in my nature to be organized like this…

    [li] Essays:[/li]- Prompt #1: Wrote about growing up in a dangerous neighborhood and how my grandmother had raised me while my parents had to make ends meet. My parents were both Vietnamese immigrants; one of them escaped over night while being chased by Communist soldiers. I eventually started growing up at my parents’ run-down nail salon where I met several kinds of people and experienced many good and bad events. All of this, including being at my school, which meant racism (I’m the only Asian kid in my class) and my environment (the deep South), has foster a strength to endure.
  • Prompt #2: Wrote about eventually raising my little brother on the daily while my parents continued to work. I ended up playing the parent role most of the time for him (taught him how to ride a bike, help with homework, yell at him for doing wrong things, foster his imagination, etc.). This experience was my proudest accomplishment and that it has made me change myself to become more like my younger brother, who also taught me something: TO BE FEARLESS AND CURIOUS! Sometimes, you just shouldn’t grow up completely…
  • Additional Comments: I utilize this to further emphasize on my parents’ and younger brother’s impact on my life. I also mentioned the friends that I met while I was at my summer activities at UC: Berkeley. They were the ones that changed me the most; they opened my mind up and motivated to make a difference in others’ lives. I also wrote about how change starts with one person and explained my poor test scores, but at the same time admitting that it’s who I am as a poor test taker. I mentioned that everyone has talents and abilities to offer, and because of that, it’s what creates strengths and weaknesses, which makes us all human! But all in all, I want to somehow impact the world in my own way, and that even though I lack in some things, I’ll always get better and better. It’s all about your willingness.

Other:[ul]
[] State: GA
[] Country: USA
[] School Type: Small (323 students), Private, All-Boys, Military, Religious (Roman Catholic)
[] School Profile: It’s a very traditional school considering it’s been around since 1902. Just recently have academics really taken off; to be honest, my class was the first one to be put on the school’s new curriculum. We’re not like the best school, academically, within the community, but we’re definitely getting up there and competing really well against other schools. We definitely have an interesting environment, since we’re a Catholic school with only boys. JROTC is a tradition around here and we’re require to take it for two years. I chose to stay in the program after my two years. Our JROTC program though is one of the best within the region, if not the nation. Religion is also a required course for every student. We’re not so ethnically diverse though. Lastly, we only have ten AP courses being offered. Two of them are new this year, and I was not allowed to take them because of schedule constraints. But hey, I got the most APs ever in my school.
