-JSA Club member
-100+ hours of community service, also this was pretty specific to my interests, I mostly dealt with projects involving water conservation and beach cleanups/volunteering for the lifeguard department, so somewhat bio related.

 • 1 year varsity swim as a freshman
 • A couple other random EC’s but this was the bulk of it, I managed to fill up all spots on the application though.

Essays. Good, and I think they made me seem rather unique and showed off my leadership strengths. But they were by no means amazing.

Accepted to: UC Davis, UCSD, UCSB (Honors), UMichigan (EA), U Washington (Purple & Gold scholarship).

Denied: WUSTL, Cal Poly SLO (Overqualified??)

Waiting for: Stanford, USC, Berkeley, Cornell, Penn (all the big boys yikes)

Berkeley is my top choice though  THANK YOU!!!

Hey guys!

Given that EECS is heavily competitive, I’m curious what the average accepted eecs student profile looks like.

If anyone could chance me, I’d really appreciate it. Also, I’m keeping it a bit vague for the sake of anonymity.

Major: EECS
GPA: 3.87
*note: All classes are A’s except a B in calc 2 class over the summer which I was also doing an internship and building a car, and a B in english during my very first semester.

Background: Latin, 1st generation college student, med-low income
Transfer student from a California community college

VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE:
~ Held children’s workshop and concert in indian reserve which spanned a week
~ Subsequent year, built radio tower in indian reserve
~ Went to a run down apartment complex, door to door, giving out bread and other food items to anyone who needed it.
~ Went to a homeless shelter in San Diego to help with serving food to the homeless.
~ Drove to a Mexican Orphanage in Tijuana to deliver school supplies and toys for the children. Spent the day helping out in the facility.

PERSONAL PROJECTS AND INTERESTS:
~ Tore apart brand new car and completely built it up, no prior experience, posted whole project on forums, paving the way for other enthusiasts to follow suit, sought out and attained sponsorship across 33 companies totaling over $80,000.
ESSAY DETAILS
I’ve had everyone I know look at it and give me feedback, and also took it to my community college’s UC application essay reviewers about 8 times… Even they thought my essay was pretty awesome, and one of the reviewers mentioned how my early revision was the best he’s seen all semester.

FUTURE PLANS
Mentioned in the essay how basically I want to either create my own tech startup in silicon valley, or join one. So, I’m a bit entrepreneurial.

Reason I shied away from business major, I grew up working with my dad in his business, oftentimes waking up at 4am in the morning with him to go to work. In the process, I learned a lot about business and people skills that I used in sales. I knew business was something I could become somewhat proficient in by teaching it to myself.

I wanted to major in something that was more difficult, something that would be hard to teach myself. I want to possess the skill set needed to invent or innovate something which I could in-turn bring to market. I don’t know if that’s a plus in their eyes, or do they just gloss over that?

Thanks again guys!

@Mangiafuoco, completely unfair your rejections and waitlists. Your test scores are great. You took a very academically challenging courseload during your high school career, but the UCs didn’t reward you for that. It appears they focused on the unweighted GPA. Did the same thing to my son. It boggles the mind. I hope Berkeley truly looks beyond the unweighted GPA and sees what a strong candidate you are. Good luck!
