The Official Chances Thread!

Can someone tell me how Cal calculates GPA?

Freshman: core academic classes (language, science, English, math, history/social studies) all “Honors”: B+ B+ B+ A A
electives (including arts, Phys Ed): mixed “Honors” and “college prep”, all A’s.

Sophomore: core classes (all “Honors”): B+ A A A A
electives: mixed “Honors” and “college prep”, all A’s.

Junior: core classes (2 “Honors”, 3 AP): A A A A A
electives: mixed “Honors” and “college prep” all A’s.

(Senior: core classes taking 3 AP, 1 “Honors”, and 1 advanced seminar (can only take after highest available AP course is completed in subject, but not technically AP).)

My understanding is that they don’t look at Freshman grades; do they look at electives, arts, phys ed? Phys Ed is 1/3 credit/year, electives are 1 credit/year, plus a 2/3 credit required course in Health.

For Soph and Junior years only, in core academic classes only, 3.9 unweighted, plus 3 A’s in Junior year AP courses so 4.2 weighted in core academics for those 2 years. Add in 2-2/3 credits in non-core, non-Phys Ed, that’s 12-2/3 credits for those two years, so that’s 4.16 weighted? Or do they give +0.3 for the one Sophomore “plus” grade, making it 4.18?

I really want to get into Berkeley. I know that i’m competitive but I want to know my real chances :pensive:

@fccdad UC Berkeley looks at “Your weighted and unweighted UC grade point average (calculated using 10th and 11th grade UC-approved courses only)”

For more info, you can go to <a href=“Freshmen Requirements - Office of Undergraduate Admissions”>http://admissions.berkeley.edu/freshmanrequirements</a>

Also, just to clarify, the college is “Letters and Science”, not Arts and Sciences.

Hi! My S is applying to UC Berkeley and UCSB! But I am worried about social instability, gun shootings and the lack of safety around Berkeley’s campus. Also, He is a asian chubby male, so I am bit worried about whether he will be accepted or be segregated the diverse community. If this is so, I am looking at more small, liberal arts school. Let me know please, thanks

-Concerned B-mom

Hi. Let me just say first of all that I’m about to (in worst case scenario) end up with 1 C and 2 Bs and (in best case scenario) 2 Bs during my FIRST semester of JUNIOR year. Will the 1 C significantly decrease my chances at UC Berkeley? I’ve only received 1 B per semester in math during sophomore year out of 7 classes, all of which I’ve gotten an A in, and I’m taking 3 weighted honors courses and 2 weighted AP courses this year.

If I managed to get all As next semester, would that make up for my poor first semester grades? I’m usually an A student; the primary reason for the bad grades this semester was a friend’s suicide, which shook me up very much.

So in summary my grades are:
Sophomore year: 6 As, 1 B in weighted honors (math) class, both semesters
Junior year: 4 As (2 are regular, 1 weighted honors, 1 AP), 2 Bs (1 AP, 1 weighted honors) 1 C (weighted honors math)

If I receive all As next semester, I’ll have a 3.8 unweighted (excluding senior year, during which I can improve this gpa), and a 4.2 weighted gpa. I haven’t taken the SAT yet, but practice tests give me a 2070~2100 range, with a best score in one sitting of 2230.

Thank you!

@flancakes‌ your UW gpa is a bit shaky, considering the average accepted gpa last year was ~3.89. I assume you’re applying in to the college of chemistry? admission into CoC is more difficult than letters and science, so keep that in mind (17% acceptance overall, but maybe 10-11% for CoC). Numbers aside, I feel like you could have a good shot since you have EC’s and if you write a stellar personal statement. good luck!

@flancakes‌ also I see that your AP chem and sat ii chem scores aren’t that competitive (considering many people who apply to the college of chemistry have 5’s and 800’s) so I would reconsider applying to COC and maybe just try LNS.

@AndrewJeska‌ are you applying EECS? keep in mind that’s probably the most competitive major at Berkeley (7-8% acceptance rate) and you’ll need to demonstrate a keen interest in that major/ really stand out to get in.

@AndrewJeska‌ also have you taken the SAT? the UC’s prefer sat over act scores from what I’ve heard

@ShaneBlakeEy‌ since you’re applying into LNS, the major you put on your app won’t really matter with regards to admission. You have a solid chance just based off numbers, and I would definitely submit ALL the AP tests you’ve passed, since it won’t hinder your chances, and if you get in, you’ll get credit for it!

@maddi12‌ I think you’ve got a good shot, but you should definitely consider taking the SAT, since it’s more commonly favored by colleges and just to be safe

@dragonnelite‌ thanks for the feedback!
