@AnthroFlo choose UCLA. Go with your gut instinct. If you see more postive in UCLA than in Berkeley, then go to UCLA. They are PAC 12 schools so you can’t go wrong either way. You can always go to the other for your graduate if you choose to pursue your Master’s.

That’s what I thought @Bookham.
I guess I just don’t understand too much about the college process because I did not know it was possible to get a bachelor’s and a master’s degree at the same time! @CollegeDropout, can you please explain?

I could be wrong, but my understanding is that in the honors program you can get a limited number of credits towards a masters- not that the programs are done simultaneously. That’s still a great thing, but I haven’t seen anything that says you earn dual degrees.

@babyface11
Cal doesn’t offer a masters degree in anthropology
only PhD, and I don’t really think the PhD route is for me. Besides, if I were to go to grad school, the aim would be Stanford.

It’s complicated because at first my gut was very firmly adamant about UCLA, even when everyone was telling me to go to Berkeley. I got into UCLA, I cried, I wanted to submit my SIR but I decided to wait. Heard back from Cal and decided I owed it to myself to do research. Through research I found out that Cal has better academics and has some other key elements not found at UCLA. I started to get worried because logically I knew Cal was the best choice but my heart still wanted UCLA. After much thought I decided to go to Cal, started to find positives in it, thought I could go to UCLA to get my masters if I don’t get into Stanford (because UCLA does have an MA program); however, I then found out I got Regents at UCLA. I was finally getting used to the idea of Cal and that just made me re-evaluate everything. I am all over the place with this now.

@Bookham

@AnthroFlo: I’m sorry, I got confused. It’s not the college honors program, but the departmental honors program. Both are very similar, except for the Departmental honors program, you have to wait until you have completed at least 24 units at UCLA with a 3.5 GPA and it allows you to purse a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree at the same time. With the College Honors program, you just have to have 3.75 community college GPA to apply, but you can’t get a master’s with it. Here is a link that talks about the program.

@CollegeDropout1, oh that’s interesting. never heard of that.
so with departmental honors, you can get a B.A. and a masters at the same time?

@randombookie yup, as long as you meet the requirements.

@AnthroFlo that does sound like a tough decision. However, I personally would choose UCLA and being in the Regents helps as well. The reason I would not go to Cal is the atmosphere as well as the location. I personally did not like it and I could not see myself there. I have faith that you wll choose the right one for you. I would suggest picking soon because you don’t wanna miss out on either one!

You’re going to have to decide by Sunday, @AnthroFlo.

@AnthroFlo - flip a coin, draw a school name out of a hat, play Rock Paper Scissors, or draw straws. You can’t lose either way! Although getting the Regents is a pretty damn good signing bonus!

@anthroflo, how is Berkeley the “logical” choice at this point? You’d save money at UCLA which would be benificial considering you want to go to Stanford for GS. You’d have priority registration plus other perks. Your gut and heart are telling you to go there. LA has the better music scene. And I highly doubt Berkeley would put you in a better position to get into Stanford GS.

Sounds to me like this would be your only opportunity to go to Cal and that is what’s holding you back.

Don’t remind me @Cayton :((

I will try all of the above @2016Candles, thanks for the recommendations!

@Zalrons
Berkeley in my mind was the logical choice because:
- they initially offered me more aid (but I now have a full ride to UCLA)
- they have better professors and courses (for the sub-sub discipline in Anthropology that I want to study and go to grad school for, UCLA has no courses in this area at all)
- i like the surrounding area and environment better
- literally everyone told me to go there over UCLA

After everything, after visiting UCLA last weekend and Cal before that, I was convinced it was Cal. I just feel like I would fit better in Berkeley, my mind was at peace with it, my heart was at peace with it, I was at peace with going to Berkeley. I wanted to go to Berkeley. Nothing about this makes logical sense to me anymore.

@AnthroFlo

Seems like you should go to Berkeley then.

@AnthroFlo - There’s a girl on the FB transfer group for UCLA who is an anthro major as well. She had been going back and forth between UCLA and cal just like you. She just decided UCLA yesterday or today. Maybe you could ask her her thought process. She may be a good recourse for you. Her name is Teena, and the post is near the top.

I’ll look into it, thanks @2016Candles!

@AnthroFlo

I hope to see you at Berkeley

@anthroflo, oh ok! I was confused because I thought after this weekend you weren’t leaning one way or another. As I predicted earlier I think you’ll end up at Berkeley and it sounds like a good fit. Good luck!

@Zalrons, it wasn’t that I was totally neutral after my weekend at UCLA it was more like my mind frantically running back and fourth between wanting to go to Cal and UCLA… like a dog chasing their tale, kind of just going round and round in circles but never really getting anywhere. That is me now.

Not to put pressure on you AnthroFlo but the days are ticking away!

@AnthroFlo the same thing happened to me. I was so convinced that I was going to Cal; I thought about all the amazing stuff I could experience and the prestige of graduating from Berkeley, I even submitted my SIR. Last week I agonized rethought everything through and I realized that for my goals of grad school the most logical choice would be to go to UCLA. Giving up Cal as my undergraduate institution was probably the hardest decision I ever made. Do the “logical” perks that UCLA is offering trump your desire to go to Cal?
