The Official Fall 2014 UCLA Transfer Decisions Thread

@Cayton Have a look: http://papyrus.math.ucla.edu/gradquals/data/basic-13S.pdf

Maybe once you take upper divisions this comes easier, but I doubt it.

The Econ/Math departmental scholar is more doable, no qualifying exam, just a GPA requirement. But a masters in Econ isn’t really worth it.

@CSB111

You know a math test is hard when there are symbols there that you haven’t even seen before.

If you decide to go to grad school, that might just be the beginning. I can’t even begin to imagine how hard a master’s program in math is. :O

@Cayton Yeah I don’t see myself really doing a straight up graduate degree in math, if anything I am way too far behind and not some math savant.

If I fail to get a decent job in 2-3 years from now, I might just go for applying for PhD programs, I just have to decide if I want to do Econ or something else.

How did your daughter do with classes?

@2016Candles‌ It all turned out great! She’s really happy with her schedule. She got into one closed class that she wanted to take with a prof who has a really fun great rep so she was happy with that. There was another closed one that she could not get but it was ok because she grabbed another. So she has two that fulfill req and one fun one, which is what she wanted.

She also said she wanted you guys who have not gone to orientation yet to know that she really thought the overnight was very worthwhile. About ten ended up staying overnight (pretty equally divided male female) and they gave them a very detailed tour of Westwood with notes on best places to eat etc. and places that give UCLA discounts. Plus, it gave her a sense of the dorms - closet space, bad mattresses, and really cold because the AC blasts (although it might warm up with more bodies).

She also said there were some sweet deals at a pizza place for students. She said she will try to remember her username here and post so ppl can ask questions.

They only allow Soc majors to sign up for 1 upper division Sociology class, but y’all know me, I figured out how to get into 3!

Make sure to check if classes you want are cross listed. If they are, the other section(s) may have open seats.

@2016Candles‌

Just one class? The ■■■■?

It’s super impacted. You can do 1 upper and 1 lower if you need it. But that 1 lower div only had 8 spots, and there were about 35 Soc majors who needed it. I didn’t even try for that one.

That’s interesting candles. Comm Studies is super impacted but she got two upper division. I guess each major decides differently.

My counselor called in a class for me. For someone whose major is never given any preference since its interdepartmental and who in the future will have to wait for second pass anyway to get most of their classes like me, the orientation wasn’t too bad. You just gotta be prepared. It took a long time for me to find what I wanted since I had to look for classes in so many different departments, but for ya’ll who just need classes in your major it seems less difficult.

I back doored my way into extra Soc classes by finding open spots in other subjects that were cross listed with Soc classes.

@2016Candles‌

That’s pretty ingenious.

Smart @2016Candles‌ ! B-)

Hey! I’m lindyk8s daughter. I stayed over night before and just finished orientation today!! It went pretty well:). If any of you have questions or concerns just ask. I’ll try to answer them the best I can:)

What exactly is your major?

comm major checking in. had orientation today, was only able to add one course within my major that i kind of wanted. added one more comm class with a professor everyone despises, and an elective in some random music history course that was open. the request my nsa put in for a class i desired was rejected. overall, the process took about an hour, and i feel pretty defeated. hopefully i’ll be able to add into other courses on the 23rd.

on another note, am i the only one who skipped the workshops? did i miss out on anything?

@2016candles Pre International Development Studies and hopefully double majoring in Asian Studies (Area Studies). I need to take a course in almost every social science and I almost couldn’t have my preferred polisci course because they only reserve it for polisci majors, not the poor interdepartmentals that get the scraps and have no choice.
@Thelionking8 I see we are both lion king themed!

@Thelionking8 For the overnight stay, did you get to your own room or did it go for the room mate experience? Were there significant changes for orientation due to the flooding? Thanks

For those who haven’t been to an orientation yet, did your guys degree audits get updated yet? Would really like to have that handy to get some planning done.

Has anyone got this…

There are several issues that you may need to resolve: …"

I don’t ever remember using this site, and just checked my application status and it seems my app status is “Application Awaiting Processing.” Did I screw up big time for not checking up on this site? I thought I’ve completed all financial aid requirements. I try to submit school change, but it wouldn’t let me saying it’s waiting on G6 certification. Any advice on this would be appreciated, really need cal grants to attend ucla.
