Anyone else in Gardenia? Haven’t seen anyone since most are in Holly lol

@lindky8 haha, yeah, At least they are trying to make the school diverse, which means that UCLA recognizes that diversity is important.

What’s sad is the lack of guidance both in HS and in CC. This forum is filled with students of all colors who just didn’t do well enough in HS, but completely turned it around in CC. Most of those students are from schools in areas with low numbers of blacks and minorities in general. Resources are vastly different. SMC has more students transfer to UCLA even though they have less students than West LA. West LA however is about 50% black whereas SMC is about 10%.

If you don’t know how to do better and change your situation, you can’t do better.

@2016Candles, I think the problem starts at elementary school. If minorities had the same resources that other people had, then UCLA would have a more diverse campus. I truly feel sorry for people that feel isolated at UCLA.

After some research, I found one of my roommates. Appears to be a freshman… : /

I can only imagine how anyone feels when they are the only person being represented, either ethnically or gender-wise, although I have definitely felt male condescension, and lack of female representation over the years.

I almost hate to bring this up because it is so #whitegirlproblems and trivial, but in the mid-80s I went to Tokyo, and I was on my own for a while. I’m very tall with red hair. Anyway, I was walking around the shops and I realized that everyone was looking at me as I went by, and kind of snickering. I mean they were not looking at me in a good way, that was obvious. Wherever the hell I was, there were no white people and I was being subliminally treated like an oddball. I remember thinking, sh*t, I am getting outta here. And I left early.

Of course, I doubt it’s like that now as everything has become more globally open - even if I am a ginger! But back then…

@Lindyk8 That’s exactly what I feel like when I go to the beach. I feel like everyone is starting at me. I just feel so crowded when I am there.

CSB111.

How did u find him? I only found one of my roommates he’s Korean.

I think it’s good to acknowledge that anyone can feel out of place depending on the circumstances.

I don’t feel like that anymore. Today I just live my life. Most of the time I don’t even notice if I am the only black person in the room or if I’m one of 50. This is not a big deal to me anymore, but back then it was a very big deal to me.

I think that’s true, candles. Both my kids are Asian and when my first was adopted, I remember thinking, am I gonna feel funny with ppl looking at us? But, you know, it never ever entered my head after that first brief thought. And I never saw anyone do a double-take, well maybe once or twice early on. And as far as my mental image we all look exactly the same. It’s a non-issue.

@cochoa14 His email was his name and I just searched it on Facebook. The other name is just a generic name so I’m not sure. I guess I’ll send them an email or something…

@Cayton Hey I got 263A in Rieber Terrace so I wont be too far away from you lol. I don’t post that much, im just a lurker and I read all the comments, and I’ve noticed that were getting very similar paths here. I was also at session 205 and I also got that Greek History class haha. I’m guessing we’ll be seeing each other quite frequently once school starts.

holy ■■■■, @24luke16

Same orientation session…same Greek history class. lol

Well, as I’ve said before, it’ll be pretty easy to spot me in or around Rieber Terrace and in the Greek History class for obvious reasons. :))

honestly I did look for you @Cayton at the orientation and I’m pretty sure I saw you. I only saw 2 black guys and one was middle-aged, so I assume the other was you haha. Oh yah we also got the same move-in time, so unless you change it we’ll probably bump into each other then.

@24luke16

I changed my move in time to 1:00 on Saturday, Sept. 27.

And I guess it’s possible that you saw me.
I’m kind of short, so if you saw a black dude who’s 5’5"-5’6", then that was almost certainly me.

haha you messed up the streak @Cayton.

And ok then it was you. I’ll know who to look for when I have questions about our class lol

@CSB111 What floor are you on?

@OCaptnMyCaptn The 4th floor.

@Cayton

I don’t know why but I imagined you were a really tall guy. Like six feet.

@Csb111 I am also on the 4th floor, room 429!
