Yo! How’s your quarter been so far?

Yo! How’s your quarter been so far?

@ocnative

Fantastic. The quarter system isn’t as difficult as people say it is. Just do some homework everyday or every other day and you’ll be set. People might say the system is hard when transferring from a community college that’s on a semester system because they were on summer break for so long. I don’t know.

The food is as good as they say it is and everyone here is pretty cool. Almost everyone on my floor is a new transfer and they’re pretty social.

Lots of walking! My professors and classes are also very good and erudite. I can see why they’re teaching there.

I haven’t really gotten involved in any clubs yet, but I may change that later in the quarter. How’s Berkeley going for you? I know you said it was somewhat difficult and time-consuming but that you liked it anyway.

@Cayton

Great to hear. I’m glad to know you’re enjoying your time there so far!

As for Berkeley, it’s been pretty great in general. My professors are interesting and knowledgable but I’m not a fan of one of my classes, which is an international relations class. The material is not interesting enough but I’ve made good friends in that class, so I don’t regret taking it! Haha.

Also, that’s cool that your floor is all new transfers and social. Mine is the opposite…lol. I have a great roommate though so it’s all good. Anyways, you should definitely check out the clubs on campus! The clubs I’ve joined at Cal have made my experiences even more greater.

@ocnative

I’ll be sure to keep that in mind!

Currently at Powell finishing up a mid-term paper, there is this guy who has brought a mini air-matress and is snoring his head off(AND I mean LOUD). I swear, people use this place as their sleeping room rather than a library.

@Tik1127

My elective is harder than my major classes, ironically. And yeah, I’ve heard people take their studying at Powell very seriously. For example, some people are said to do what you mentioned and bring food and food accessories(like toasters and stuff) to the library. UCLA is an interesting place to be, I can tell you that.

Also, I just got through two midterms this week. One for my history class today and one from yesterday for my philosophy class. I’m glad that’s over with.

@Cayton what’s your elective again?
I haven’t had any midterms yet.
I do have small weekly essays
And had a small 6 pager paper so far
Not looking forward to midterms

@sonic23

My elective is the history of capitalism from 1500 to 1945. You’re lucky not to have had any midterms yet.

@Cayton Is it ok to get drunk every weekend?

@cayton I had thought so but now I realized they are back to back

@CollegeDropout1

If you’re not getting drunk because you have some personal issues and doing it for fun, then sure I guess.

Hey guys, I am wondering when the last week you can petition for pass or no pass? I heard week 6 was, so is this true? Are you allowed to do it in your first quarter?

When are your guy’s winter registration apt? Mine is Nov 23!

Is anyone planning on taking 4 classes. I am and every transfer I talked to looks at me like I am crazy!

@sonic23
My Reg appt is 11/21 @ 9am. I’m currently taking 4 classes, and taking 4 next quarter too. I typically get the same reaction as you have, but only you can know what you’re up for. Obviously 4 is harder than 3, but it’s totally doable. My goal for my 4th class next quarter is for it to be fun class, and have a limited amount of reading. Right now 2 of my classes have a very heavy reading load : 150-300 pages of reading per week each. The other 2 combined is usually about 50 per week. Hard, but definitley doable if you’re willing to do it.

@sonic23

November 23rd for me as well. 5:30 PM that day.

And yeah, I’m strongly considering taking 4 classes in the winter quarter as well. Most people I’ve talked to on my floor about it seem to want to enroll in just 3 classes next quarter.

How do you like your history classes so far? Any significant difference between the history classes at UCLA as opposed to the ones at your community college?

Would anyone like to share their thoughts now that you are 1/2 way through your first semester? Any tips, or things you would have done differently?

I figure I’d check in.

I was having trouble at first, but after the first wave of midterms, I feel like everything is manageable. I didn’t do so hot on these first tests but now I’m pretty confident I know what to expect/what to work on. Luckily I’ve got chances to recover.

Don’t let the quarter sneak up on you; try to stay on top of your work and you’ll be fine. Honestly, being slightly/somewhat behind in your readings(I can only speak for north campus majors, though, I suppose) isn’t that bad, but you’ll have somewhat less time to catch up than on a semester system. Still, I’m technically somewhat behind in readings for all of my classes, but it’s manageable and I’ve always been a bit of a procrastinator.

Use “bruinwalk” online to look up the professors. Many students prefer to review their teachers there. Quite a few professors aren’t on bruinwalk, though, so be prepared to take classes with people you don’t know much about.

Oops, I clearly don’t know the lingo. What is considered a north campus major? As supposed to south, east and west majors?
