The Official M10 2024 Freakout Thread

Yes. Also students are using free periods etc to do hw. In addition, you will have sports, ECs and arts during the day so you may not be able to do hw

You are going to need that study hall and then more. My daughter is a 3rd former and typically goes to the library to do homework whenever possible before dinner if it does not conflict with sports, clubs, etc. She still has more than enough homework to work through study hall. I believe she also has 1st period free for homework as well. I believe that throughout her first trimester she learned to manager her time much more efficiently, so it gets easier, but the workload is what it is.

From Waitlist?

Does anybody know if it’s easier to get into a top bs in 10th or 11th grade? (as in more spots)

In general, 10th is easier and 11th is extremely difficult

is 12th impossible? :sob: especially if you are international and looking for full financial aid

It very difficult. And it’s probably not a good idea if you’re planning to go to university directly after HS. Usually, people apply as a repeat 11th

Pretty much. You would need to bring something major to the table like being a top level athlete in a sport that is important to the school. Those are the only 12th grade admits that I have seen. You might be better off looking at PG.

oh i see! do you know if boarding school give financial aid to PG? I am considering on applying next year

yes I am def not a top level athlete lol but I will look into PG!

My understanding is no. Again, if you are bringing something to the table, maybe.

Yes. Coach was texting my son regularly and was very encouraging and hopeful up to the day before admissions notification. My son had a competitive package, but did not do well on the SSAT. He was crushed at being waitlisted, especially after a lot of build up from the coach.
Coach was clear that he only has so much pull and the AO would need to look the whole picture. But his attention still added to the hope and expectation.

why is 10th easier and 11th so hard? i’m just curious

yeah, i’m wondering why that is the case

Several schools limit their freshman class because they need more support. They then fill out the class in 10th grade.

I will add that my (then) rising 11th grade student got into 4 boarding schools for 11th grade (non reclassed) and was not an athlete or regeneron level student (and WL at several others)
Pleasantly surprised !

And once you learn how to manage the work more efficiently, the workload increases! Im certain kiddo1 has never had a spare moment of study hall in her 4 years at lville. As a fifth former, she says she has 4 hours of homework a night. Then add on to that the work she does for ECs, college applications, etc.

Many also do this because of dorm size, to make room for JBS kids, or to accomodate students (like the JBS ones) coming from systems with the break after 9th.

Additions at 10th are pretty normal and sizable at several schools.
