The official Pakistani Thread for the class of 2013

Okay, I know I am going to sound really, really stupid, but I just was wondering, what are A-level/o-level examinations? We don’t have those here in the u.s. and i have always wondered what they are. i know that they are some sort of board exam, but how does it all work out? i have always been curious…

…go ahead, you can laugh. i have had the same reaction before. :)

and, one more stupid question…what is LUMS? i know it is a really good university but what does it stand for?

LUMS is the Lahore University of Management Sciences. Until recently, it only offered humanities and economics/etc majors, but from last year it’s opened another science and engineering school, known as LUMS SSE.

oh…okay. thanks. i feel really stupid right now. =/

@Karpov
Thank you so much! :)

@ Volume 12
O/A Levels is Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) the examination board from University of Cambridge. It is probably the most dominent of all testing methods for Grade 8-12 in the so-callad upper-class of Pakistan.

O Levels - Ordinary Levels - Grade 9-10 (Depending on the school, it can also be 10-11)
A Levels - Advanced Levels - (Divided into Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Levels & Advanced Levels, taken in last 2 years of high school)

LUMS - Lahore University of Management Sciences. (Phase-5, DHA, Lahore :p)

erm, Talha, O/A-levels is administered by many other organisations, and they’re not necessarily British either. Although i agree that in Pakistan, at most of the places, O/A-levels are usually from the CIE.

O/A-levels is really quite a general term for exams based on the British ‘pattern’ of testing.

CIE/Edexcel/AQA etc GCE O LEVELS
CIE/Edexcel/AQA etc GCE AS LEVELS
CIE/Edexcel/AQA etc GCE A LEVELS

happy? :)

FOR ZIPPY JUNIORS

Students Hoping To Attend U.S. Universities Should Register For Next ACT Exam By May 08, 2009: The next ACT college admission and placement exam, a requirement for students planning to pursue their undergraduate degree at most colleges and universities in the United States, will be administered locally at USEFP-Lahore Testing and Advising Center on June 13, 2009. Students who wish to take the exam on this date must register online at [ACT, Inc. : A Student Site for ACT Test Takers](http://www.actstudent.org) by May 08, 2009. To register, students must first establish a free ACT student Web account. After creating this account, students should click the “Register to Test” link and follow the instructions on the Web screens to complete their registration. Payment is required to complete the registration and must be made by valid credit card. The international registration fee is $56 (~4500PKR) for the traditional ACT (with no writing test) and $71 (~5700PKR)for the ACT Plus Writing (which includes the optional writing exam). The ACT Plus Writing is offered only on the October, December, and April international test dates in 2008–2009. Some U.S. colleges and universities require that students submit a writing score, but many do not. A list of colleges and universities that require the writing test can be found at [ACT Writing Test](<a href=“The ACT Test for Students | ACT”>The ACT Test for Students | ACT). The ACT is the only exam accepted for admission purposes by every single four-year college and university in the United States, including all Ivy League institutions. The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam that measures what students have learned in school. It consists of four required multiple-choice tests in English, mathematics, reading and science and the optional essay writing test. ACT’s website, [ACT, Inc. : A Student Site for ACT Test Takers](http://www.actstudent.org), offers students helpful information, free sample tests and inexpensive test prep materials.

Congrats! :)

Congrats Saif! SSE or SDSB??

Ok so Aga Khan test results are here.
For Aitchison the scores are something like this.
75% 1 Student
69% 2
65% 2
64% 1
60% 3

There are 2-3 more. Don’t know their percentages. I know a girl in LGS got ~77%

Percentage to qualify for the interview was 59.5%

@ talha and Flib … Thanx alot…

I got into SHSSL or watever for BSC honours Economics… My 1st option…
But the bad part is ths cud take me away from mcgill… My parents are all praises for LUMS :P

10 people from Beacon Bani Gala got their LUMS (not LUMS SSE) acceptances today by post, no emails. But as far as i can tell I think they are the ones who did not apply for financial aid. Those that I know who have applied for aid, none of them has yet gotten any reply. Good luck everyone and wish me luck!

@joiya…only abt a dozen guys from Aitchison this year made it to aga khan…arnd 15 guys from Hasanabdal got into Aga Khan last year—is Aitchison going down or what!!! :D

Congrats on lums and hard luck for McGill…!i think an education in Pakistan at undergra wud be better…u can always rely on Fulbrights and Chevenings for post-grad!!

@whazup113: You applied for aid too? And on the basis of sat 1 or lcat?

@whazup113: best of luck…and there are always lots of Beaconites at LUMS wid impressive stats-hope u make it this fall…

abt aid…as far as SSE is concerned noone who applied for NOP received any decision regarding admissions as yet!though those who applied for Aid got their letters and emails but await a decision regarding the extent of aid they’ll get.so keep ur fingers crossed!

abt the internship thing,it’s mostly reference-based unless you have extra-ordinary stats or a stellar academic record or have volunteered/worked previously…

but i guess most of u on this forum are doing/just done with ur A levels…but large MNCs offer internships to only final year students though u guys can try or better still go for writing as a pastime in ur summers or a call centre job (like i’ve had a stint at TRG opposite holiday inn)and its well-paying but awkward working hrs…plus joiya,u get to see/interact wid a lot of girls ;)

PnG,Ericsson etc offer jobs only to Engineering students in their final/pre-final years at college!

btw…i’m in my final year BS electrical so u oughta call me bhaijan! LOL :P
