The OFFICIAL School of Cinematic Arts Discussion 2009

Hey there- about phone interviews

Most of the applicants last year who were accepted were not given a phone interview (though I believe there was one who did get an interview.) Some have stated that its a random thing…just to check. Mostly the phone interviews, as far as I know, were for graduate applicants. Anyway… plenty of people apparently got in without an interview. I am, however, beginning to wonder about SO many statuses being updated for CC SCA applicants… kind of strange.

Though, it may make sense if we all get accepted because…after all… the fact that we are checking this forum shows how excited we are to get in-- which probably showed in our applications.

Btw, sjthejoker, what major did you apply to?

No I don’t think so. I thnk that may be only for transfers. Well it’s good to know that no one here for cinema has gotten accepted yet. I wish everyone luck. My friend got his critical studies last year on the 20th. So it’s a good day.

do you really think status updates mean anything?
i want to believe it but im scared.

i was updated on 3/18 and 3/19.

i think your idea of us being excited, thus getting updated recently, is true!

hm well thats not right i think KOHR.
i’ve read some forums in many sites and they have stated that the phone interview can be a positive thing.
they said that if they can’t fill up everyone in fall 2009, they also put some in spring semester. and many spring acceptants have received phone interviews.
and i think youre right about the no phone interviews for fall acceptants.
so that may be a good thing!
but ya, professor told me that i should be happy that i’m getting this call cuz not that many applicants are getting this interview

ps and how do you check the status? and im a production major

You can check your status by going to usc.edu … clicking on the admissions tab…going to undergraduate admissions and then logging in… or you could just follow this link:
https://camel2.usc.edu/AdmOnlineApplication/</a> and log in

Anyway, are you saying that you think the phone calls are for spring admits? I don’t see why they would do it for the spring '10 admits as opposed to the fall admits. Very strange. I believe thejobe was the first person on these forums to get a SCA phone interview this year…I believe he was accepted to the regular school but not to SCA. I could be mistaken.

thanks KOHR.
I have no idea. They are very random in what they are doing.
I can not really know exactly what that interview means in terms of which semester i get in. (although i applied to fall 2009)
Gosh why aren’t they just mailing us our acceptances?
we will be all happy :)

I bet the admissions dept. Has fun making the applicants all nervous. They really should tell you your notification online. It’s kind of outdated for such a high tech school. I tho k though that most of the cinema people here have a good chance. All seemed to almost have same update status. I think the word will come in a few days.

So has anyone here considered what they would do if they are accepted as a Spring '10 student as opposed to Fall '09? According to everything I’ve seen, it is exactly like being accepted in the fall… you just go through the entire course with 1 semester delay. You start 1 semester later, and finish 1 semester later. You have the same amount of kids (50-ish) in your class, and still get some amount of participation with the other programs. Pretty cool, because it basically doubles the acceptance figures.

what did they ask during the phone interview?

Well, I’m not sure if this is the norm - but the lady who called to interview me was extremely nice and gave me a lot of compliments. She said things like “I was extremely impressed by you and your application” and “you seem to have a truly unique take on film, which sets you apart” and we talked for a bit. She asked some standard questions like “What are some of your most influential films and why?” and “What’s something that upsets you with today’s society?” The call lasted like 20 - 30 minutes, and after about 5 we seemed to be just talking. I really enjoyed the conversation. At the end she said “Well, I’m planning to give you my full recommendation. It’s been a pleasure talking to you.” Of course, I was lucky. I was in LA at the time on vacation, so I actually went to the SCA and sat in on a class. I had a chance to meet her and a few of the professors, it was really nice.

So, all in all, I’m not sure what any of it means. The compliments might just be standard, but, I was happy to receive a call.

And about the Spring admission - I doubt I would go. I’ve already been accepted to NYU and UT and I would just have to take it as a “sign” of sorts that I wasn’t meant to go to USC. I don’t know, I say that, but USC is for sure my first choice… We’ll see.

Wow, Music are you an undergrad? And if you got to meet the professors and such then that is a good sign. Can you just sign up to sit in on classes and meet them or were you invited?

Yes, I am an undergrad for Production, and during the call I mentioned that I was in LA. That’s when she said “Oh, I’d love for you to come sit in on a class.” So, I did. I sat in on a screening of the first cuts of the undergrad thesis films. It was fantastic.

Who did you meet? I was there over the summer and I met some professors. They were all great.

Thats awesome LikeLikeMusic. Haha. Its starting to look like we have the entire entering Production class right here in this thread.

Which is spooky, cause we can’t represent many of the thousands of applicants for 50 spaces. I just hope there are a lot of dud apps. Music, did they mention when you’d hear from the school?

I am going to try and find out Monday.

Well, the professor that called me and I talked with most was Jennifer Warren. I don’t really remember the others’ names. And Mrs. Warren actually called me after the fact to tell me we would know by April 1st at the latest.

i’m definitely going to usc eventhough i get in as a spring admit.
it’s a schoool im going no matter what happens haha
and my professor’s name is Robert Ballo.
He said he really liked my application and my background.
and he asked me pretty much same thing as lifelikemusic.
thats awesome lifelikemusic!

someone who got in as a spring admit last year was moved up to fall later on.

I’m not sure about anyone else, but I could have sworn that those applying for writing ( or maybe it was transfers) do not receive interviews. Any transfer or writing students get a call for an interview? Also, does anyone know if there is a list to sit in on a class? I work two jobs and I’m usually on hold for such a long time over the phone, that I haven’t been able to ask someone at the University.
