The Official UCB Fall of 2014 Decisions Thread

@Freetofly112‌

Are you pre-law? Well other than Political Science, the additional major I’m interested in pursuing is Media Studies. Still considering it though.

I hear the public transit there is great. BART ftw.

@imaplealot‌

Hey! If you signed up for the 1 Night Housing + Dinner ($50) then you are all set for the Golden Bear Express. And this includes round-trip transportation too, lol.

@moriartee

That’s a fun double major :stuck_out_tongue: lol I hope to see you in the Poli Sci classes! What’s going to be your subfield specialization?

@ocnative Nope, I’m not too interested in our judicial system. It’d be nice if I was, as that would make my post-grad plans fairly clear :stuck_out_tongue:

I was wondering if anyone knew when we could move in this year for Dorms/Campus Housing?

@Freetofly112‌ hey thanks for the advice. I’ll look into the units once I get to a computer. I don’t need a sequence for Econ, thank God. Just 1 Econ class and 1 Stat class. Wheewww.
@ocnative‌ International relations probably

I’ve never heard anything good everytime I hear of BART ^^* thankfully I’ll be bringing my car ^^#

Has anyone heard anything about regents scholarship?

@imaplealot‌ August 24th for triples/quads, August 25 for everyone else.
http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/livingatcal/welcome_to_cal.html#when</a></p>

@moriartee‌ BART’s actually not bad. It’s convenient, close to campus, and goes straight to SF. Only issue is when they’re on strike, which I think ended a year ago?

@failure662: I saw that, but I don’t think it makes sense… Plus, it has 2013-2014, but the next year is 2014-2015. Plus a lot of the events this year are from 19-24/25.

@imaplealot‌ Ah, sorry, my mistake. Instruction begins August 28 this fall, so move in should be August 23/24, which is the weekend before classes start.

Who here is going to Berkeley?!

I flipped a penny I found three times, and it landed heads (Berkeley) all three times. I am so close to submitting my SIR and just moving forward :-c

@CSB111‌ so whats keeping you? haha

@CalBruin lol, I really don’t know.

I don’t think it would be prudent to predicate important decisions on games of chance, @CSB111.

@CSB111 If you are pursing a master’s degree in economics, then just remember that UCLA has a program called the Departmental scholars honors program that allows you to pursue a bachelors and master’s degree at the same time.

@CollegeDropout1 I don’t know if I want a masters in Econ, I was thinking more along the lines of a Masters in Finance or Financial Engineering.

But it is an attractive option.

You guys are going to make my head burst…

I SIR’d last week and I visited this past holiday. It was beautiful and I fell in love with it instantly and knew I made the right decision for me. :slight_smile: I’m going to CalSo on June 23rd and signed up for overnight + dinner. I thought I’d be eligible for the Golden Bear Express, but I guess not because I didn’t see anything about it when I made my reservation. So I’ll be taking the train or flying because the drive on the 5 was miserable. Also, getting from SFO or Oakland Airport to Cal is super easy. The BART is awesome - I’m planning on selling my car.

Anyone else in CS or CogSci plan their schedule yet? I’m thinking CS 61A (or AS), CS 70, CogSci 1, and ??. I heard CS 70 with Sahai is supposed to be intense.

@CSB111 How strong are your programming and math skills ? If a master’s degree in financial engineering is your ultimate goal, then I would suggest going to UCLA. You can major in Math/Econ at LA, AND you will also be given the chance to pursue a “specialization in computing”. So will be given a chance to take some computer science courses, something that you probably won’t be able to do at Cal. A Math/Econ degree with a specialization in computing will prepare you well to get a graduate degree in Finance or Financial Engineering. I just thought this is something you should know before you make your decision.

My math skills are alright, but I’ve really half a**ed my math classes (especially this semester, I’m taking Calc 3 and Linear Algebra) and pretty much threw in the towel once I realized I could get B with a terrible finish. I know how to program but it isn’t something I’ve spent a lot of time doing.

I will say that at Berkeley I can definitely take the CS61 series and some math classes (the Econ major doesn’t have a lot of requirements), but I won’t have an official distinction like I would at UCLA and it would be more scattered.

@CSB111 I don’t know if you’ve seen this https://career.berkeley.edu/Major/Major.stm</a>

It shouldn’t be difficult to declare an official minor in CS because Econ is listed on the CS department site as one of the majors that shares technical prereqs and upper division courses. You need to take the 61 series, CS 70, and three upper-division CS courses. It also holds quite a bit more weight than most minors or concentrations/specializations if graduate school is your goal. Both schools are great though. Good luck.
