The Official UCB Fall of 2014 Decisions Thread

Which group? The Housing one?

@calbro The main transfer group, class of 2016 one.

Did everyone go to their CalSo already?

Just curious, but how many of you guys have visited the Berkeley campus? Would you guys say it impressed you? If so, why? If not, why not? How’s the atmosphere of the campus?

I was always curious to know more about Berkeley’s campus, but being poor means I couldn’t afford to visit, lol.

@ocnative‌ Yep. And yeah, I stopped paying attention to that page a little xD.

@Cayton‌

I love the campus. The school spirit, weather, college town, and the campus is what really impressed me. I know that everyone might say Cal is “too liberal”, “hippie”, or has “dirty streets with homeless people” but that didn’t bother me at all. The college town of Berkeley is awesome! There’s so many things to do and it’s filled with great food that varies in different ethnic cuisines. And of course the prestige. Cal is very strong in academics and it’s also ranked as a great university for undergrad teaching (ahead of Stanfurd). Check it here http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/undergraduate-teaching

After attending my CalSo, I’m really glad I chose Cal at the end. It’s also a great change of scenery from socal.

Ah, interesting! @ocnative‌

And I see you’ve already developed a healthy sense of contempt for “Stanfurd”, so you’ll definitely make a great Berkeley student lol

Any other perspectives on Berkeley, guys?

@cayton regretting not SIR’ing to Berkeley.

I have to cosign on what @ocnative‌ said.

@JewBacca‌

lol, you wish!

I’m just curious to get perspectives on UC Berkeley. Though I don’t regret SIR’ing to UCLA whatsoever, I feel I could stand to know more about what I just rejected, lol.

What do you think of the school’s campus and student atmosphere?

@cayton :-w

@JewBacca‌

I’m waiting for a response. :)

CalSO was a really nice experience. My student leader was awesome and he’s an incoming sophomore, wow! I appreciate how he’s super reliable and leader-like without attitude. I have a feeling I’ll meet a lot more of those students at Cal. :)

@Cayton‌

I think the scolding emoji or whatever it was doing was your response.

I went to CalSo, and I had a pretty good time. There were only the CalSo leaders and incoming transfers though, and the leaders were obviously going to be really friendly, because it’s their job. So it was hard to get a feel for how actual campus life would be. I didn’t really know anyone, which kind of sucked because it seemed like everyone knew people. But I still talked to a lot of people and everyone was nice. I have no idea how it will actually be though once we start school and everyone is over being giddy and stuff.

As far as the campus, it’s soo big. I can already tell I’m going to get lost a lot. It’s pretty nice though. It doesn’t seem dirty like everyone says, and it seems blocked off from the rest of the city, which is cool.

I agree with what @ocnative said. It’s extremely beautiful! The first time I visited (about a month ago?) I was blown away by how large it is. I went to CalSo on the 23rd. We took a group hike on the 22nd to the Big C and saw most of the campus and the labs tucked away in the hillside. Everyone seems to be pretty active and a lot of people ride bikes. The general vibe was prestigious and studious but not overly stressful or cut-throat competitive. It actually seemed fairly laid back. They were very honest about the level of difficulty, but made it clear there are resources to help you. They stressed taking time to adjust and that taking 17 units at Cal is not like taking 17 units at CC. One of my favorite things about the campus is the architecture. My favorite building thus far is Bowles Hall, which looks like a castle. Unfortunately it’s for male freshman, and I’m neither a man nor a freshman. I’m a big fan of the neoclassical architectural style of some of the older buildings.

The surrounding city is very accessible and student friendly, almost integrated because the campus takes up such a large portion of the city. Lots of awesome places to eat. Lots of younger people and a good social environment. I can’t really say that about UCLA and Westwood or UCI and Irvine. The streets weren’t dirty or off-putting to me? It may be a shock if you’re from a pristine suburban environment or Newport Beach or something but it was definitely no DTLA or Mission. The weather is nice too and generally stays within the same range. All the students I met were nice and obviously very very smart. But also very interesting and had their own stories and unique quirks. You could tell they were very passionate about their choice of study. I was kind of intimidated at first, but CalSo really helped me feel more relaxed and like I fit in. I already met several friends for study groups. I was grouped with primarily civil engineering students (my student leader was a sophomore civil engineer), CS majors, and fellow CogSci majors but I met a lot of people in Anthro, a few in Psych, one in English/Creative writing.

@credulitykills @music1990 @oongaboonga‌

Very informative. Thanks!

Have fun at Cal, guys.

@credulitykills Were you on the Golden Bear Express?

when do you guys think we’ll get our housing offers? Hoping its sooner rather than later

@Freetofly112‌

Idk! I’m so anxious because I want to know whether I should be looking at other apartments, in case I don’t get offered a room I would want to live in…Anyone else looking at off campus apartments?

@freetofly112 The email they sent when we completed the housing app says late June or early July. It’ll be soon.

@ocnative No, I took the train up. But I did do the early check-in thing and stayed in Ida-Sproul Unit 3. Also did the dinner and activities (hike).
